Who Is He In This Painting?
« on: August 04, 2012, 04:56:40 PM »
Hello Everybody, could you tell who is this Grand Master in the painting below?  The master looks so grand and powerful.  I felt his great presence on the painting.  If you know him, perhaps you could throw some light on him to all the people in this world.

Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche.

This is actually a photo I took (now circulating on facebook) of a thanka that a friend of mine had at Phelgye Ling Monastery. :)

Dagom Rinpoche was a direct disciple of the great Trijang Rinpoche. Dagom Rinpoche was the first to include Dorje Shugden amongst a group of supramundane protectors in a thangka depicting the Gelug lineage tree

In Dagom Rinpoche’s previous life he was  Pelgyi Dorje took it upon himself to prevent the dharma from being entirely effaced from Tibet . Pelgyi Dorje killed King Langdarma who according to traditional Tibetan history, persecuted Buddhists, gave the order for all monasteries to be closed and for all monks to be disrobed which subsequently led to the fall of the Tibetan Empire.

Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche is also recognized as the reincarnation of Ra Lotsawa who gave the instructions on the Yamantaka transmission. Ra Lotsawa was one of the greatest translators of the teachings from Sanskrit. [More: http://www.dorjeshugden.com/forum/index.php?topic=1776.0]

More on Dagom Rinpoche:

"Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche was recognized and confirmed as a Tulku by Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. As such he became the 12th incarnation of the lineage of Dagom Rinpoches. He took Novice ordination at the age of 9 and full ordination, Bhikshu, at the age of 21 years old.

At the age of 8 and until he was 25, Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche studied all of the major and minor Tibetan sciences in Drepung Gomang Monastery in South India. Right after completing these studies, for many years, he continued to receive further teachings from such masters as H.H. Trijang Rinpoche, H.H. Ling Rinpoche, Kyabje Gyara Rinpoche, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, Kyabje Zemey Rinpoche, and Yongzin Kunchok Gyatso.

He received all the teachings, empowerments and oral transmissions. In 1983, after completing his studies, he received the degree of Geshe Lharampa, the highest degree in the Tibetan monastic system. In 1987, Rinpoche passed the tantric examinations and served as the Headmaster of Gyume Tantric College in Hunsur, India. Since then, he has given sutra and tantra transmissions to over a hundred thousand disciples in Ladakh, India, Nepal, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Singapore, and Mongolia.

From April 3, 1989, at Samten ling Monastery in Nepal for the commemoration of the passing of H.H. Panchen Lama, for twenty-two days, Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche gave instructions on the Stages of the Path [to Enlightenment] (Lam Rim) as the initiation of Vajrabhairava to 260 disciples including Gangchen Chogtrul Rinpoche, Lingka Chogtrul Rinpoche, the abbot of Samten Ling Monastery, the abbot of Shelkar Monastery, the master of Chozang Monastery, and the master of Segyu Monastery.

Then, from March 26 until May 3, 1990, for a month and twenty-seven days, Rinpoche gave the profound oral instructions of Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand by Pabongka Rinpoche to 780 monks, nuns and lay disciples including Ganden Jangtse Serkong Chogtrul Rinpoche, Drepung Loseling Drubtob Rinpoche and the masters of seven different monasteries in Nepal. At Ganden Jamgon Ling Monastery near Swayambu, Nepal, on May fourth and fifth of this year, Rinpoche gave Avalokiteshvara initiation and advice to more than a thousand Tibetans.

In 1991 from March 3 to April 23 at Drepung Gomang Monastery, Kyabje Rinpoche gave oral transmission of ten volumes of the collected works of Je Tsongkhapa, 13 Deity Yamantaka initiation, as well as the 13 Mahakala initiations and transmission of the 5 major fields of studies’ root texts to Kyabje Sharpa Choeje Lobsang Nyima, Kyabje Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche, Kyabje Gyara Chogtrul Rinpoche, Kyabje Zong Chogtrul Rinpoche, Kyabje Lakha Chogtrul Rinpoche, and Kyabje Yongzin Tulku as well as many Geshes, over three hundred monks and lay people.

In that same year from May 28 for about one month at the Ladakh Zanskar Duzing Podrang, Dagom Rinpoche gave instructions on the 8 great commentaries on the Stages of the Path [to Enlightenment] to more than three hundred disciples. On June 30 he also gave teachings on generating bodhicitta and the White Umbrella initiation to more than 4000 people of Zanskar in India. Rinpoche has a very close relation with the people of Zanskar and, at people’s requests, has traveled to sixty-eight different regions there again and again, undergoing great hardship of jorneying on foot and horseback over rivers and through dangerous passes in order to kindly give Dharma advice for the alleviation of suffering.

In the year 1992, Kyabje Rinpoche established the Ganden Monlam Chenmo Dharma Center and Dagom Migtsema Dharma Center in Nepal. On that same occasion Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche presided as throne holder of Nepal Ganden Monlam Chenmo for five days over the gathering of more than 800 Sangha members from Nyanang Phegya Ling Monastery, Samten Ling Monastery, Gaden Jamgon Ling Monastery, Shelkar Monastery, Segyu Monastery, Drupthok Monastery, Thukjechoe Ling Nunnery and Kopan Nunnery. Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche also gave teachings on Legends of Buddha’s Birth and performed prayers for all deceased and living beings. From that time on, the Ganden Monlam Chenmo Festival has been held every year.

And so for a long time Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche has been teaching Buddha Dharma and giving spiritual advice to thousands of students throughout the world, always with love and compassion. Rinpoche does not at all like to deal with politics. He only gives spiritual and truthful advice. It is because of this that his blissful Dharma activities have been flourishing purely year after year.

Yet Rinpoche’s faith and respect in the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden has remained firm and unchanging from early childhood up to the present time. Because of this, some Tibetan political officials in Dharamsala have, since 1996, made intense effort to split Rinpoche’s many faithful disciples away from him. Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche does not care for any mixture of religion and politics and, on the contrary, is one who, in every country where he travels, puts forth great effort in solely spiritual means, for the happiness and peace of everyone. If anyone wishes to know more about Rinpoche’s extensive activities, they are described in the Tibetan volume called The Jewel Garland of Precious Activities. In 2007, he performed the deed of parinirvana. All his life, he blessed countless number of beings with Buddhadharma teachings and living life according to the true teachings of Buddha".

Dagom Rinpoche passed away when he was in mid 50s. It was said that he was poisoned.

It has been said that his incarnation is back and should be around 4 to 5 years old in Mongolia. This was news I have heard 2 years ago. And you can read more from the below post

http://www.dorjeshugden.com/forum/index.php?topic=748.0

So far after this, there are no news since then. However, I am not surprise that the Dagom Labrang officials are keeping it very quiet as it can and is very dangerous for the new incarnation.

I do hope there will be news soon as many of the Shugden practitioners are waiting in much anticipation.

Icy, you may also be interested to know the other figures in the thangka.

Top left - Pabongka Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo
Top middle - Lama tsongkhapa and two sons
Top right - Trijang Rinpoche, root teacher of Dagom Rinpoche, who was also the one who recognized him

I like the fact that although Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche is a lineage lama of the Gelugpa tradition, Dagom Rinpoche gave teachings to the current incarnation of Pabongka Rinpoche. These teacher and disciple relationships where one mindstream is both student and teacher of another mindstream, are fairly commonplace in Tibetan Buddhism.

A notable example of this is the relationship between the Dalai Lamas and the Panchen Lamas, where one is first the student and then the teacher of the other. In this particular case, the Dalai Lamas and the Panchen Lamas are also responsible for recognizing the new incarnation of the other.

Even more notable is that Dorje Shugden's incarnation line was also a part of this, all the way up to the time of the Great Fifth and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. The 1st Dalai Lama, the 1st Panchen Lama and Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen were contemporaries, and the Fifth Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen were both students of the 4th Panchen Lama. More interestingly, Panchen Sonam Drakpa was taught by the second Dalai Lama, and in turn later became the teacher of the third Dalai Lama. Very interesting that the lineage of Dorje Shugden is right up there with th Dalai Lamas and the Panchen Lamas, isn't it?

2nd row left - Guhyasamaja
2nd row right - Chakrasamvara
3rd row left - Yamantaka
3rd row right - Vajra Yogini

These 4 are the main tantric practices of Lama tsongkhapa, who is of course the founder of our Gelugpa lineage. I find it interesting that all four are depicted here. It would lead me to believe of Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche is a lineage holder of all these tantric practices, true to the Gelugpa lineage of which he is a great master.

Bottom left - Kalarupa
Bottom middle - 6-arm Mahakala
Bottom right - Dorje Shugden, of course

All are dharma protectors and again, what I find interesting about this is the role they play in protecting the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa. Kalarupa is the protector of the small scope of the lamrim, 6-arm Mahakala is the protector of the great scope of the lamrim, and Dorje Shugden is the protector of Lama tsongkhapa's tradition, which encompasses the lamrim. The only protector missing here is Vaishravana, who is the protector of the middle scope of the lamrim.

In conclusion, therer are many interesting details and significances in this thangka, if one just stops to think about it...

His Eminence Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche is the eighteenth in a lineage of eminent Indian and Tibetan pandits and masters. The supreme reincarnation was discovered in a Tibetan family in Northern India and was officially recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on April 23, 1985. Rinpoche has completed his primary studies under his root guru H.E. Kyabje Lati Rinpoche and Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche

Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche was recognised by Kyabje Trijang Dorjechang, tutor to His Holiness, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, as the twelfth incarnation of the lineage of Dagom Rinpoches.

He took novice ordination at the age of nine and full ordination (Bhikshu) at the age of twenty one years old.

Watch this video of H.H. Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche giving very precious teaching about Powa. The teaching is given in Tibetan.
