This is very interesting, official China newspaper carry news of Panchen Lama’s guru giving Kalachakra, are they trying to dissuade the Tibetans from going to the Dalai Lama and coming towards Panchen Lama instead?

XIAHE, Gansu – Thousands of pilgrims gathered Saturday on a grassland near a monastery town in northwest China to attend a four-day Buddhist ritual, known as Kalachakra, offered by the 11th Panchen Lama’s guru, senior Tibetan monk Jamyang Gaytso.
“We expect more than 100,000 Tibetan Buddhism devotees to turn out during the ritual,” said a spokesman of Xiahe county, Gansu province, home to Labrang Monastery — one of the six major Gelugpa monasteries in China. “Not just Gansu, people from neighboring Qinghai and Sichuan provinces are also coming.”
Kalachakra, which means the wheel of time, is a key ritual of the Gelugpa sect of the Tibetan Buddhism. The ritual, if offered by senior monks, often draws a huge crowd.
Amid rain, the 83-year-old guru gave Buddhist teachings in Tibetan language for hours from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the first day. He sat at a center stage surrounded by circles of crimson-robed Tibetan monks and devotees who listened, meditated, and prayed. Some used mobile phones, cameras, and recorders to record the teachings.
Jamyang Gyatso, a native of Xiahe, entered Labrang Monastery at the age of eight. He earned the Gesi title, bestowed only to masters of Tibetan Buddhism, and was chosen in 1998 to guide the Buddhist studies of the 11th Panchen Lama. The guru offered Kalachakra initiation to the Panchen Lama, then 12 years old, at Zhaxi Lhunbo Monastery in Tibet in 2002.
Words of the Saturday’s ritual has been circulating on the Internet for a week, as many Tibetan scholars and religious leaders relayed the news on their Sina Weibo microblogging accounts.
“It is an opportunity that can not be missed. Best regards to my guru,” said Jompo Rinpoche, a senior monk in Xigaze, Tibet.
“It is a blessing to attend the ritual,” said Lobecheri, a monk who came to Xiahe with a dozen monastery fellows from Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai. “If I missed the Kalachakra, I would be very sad.”
As pilgrims came, tents dotted a 10-km stretch of the grassland, typical for the Tibetan nomads, though some set up their tents on flat-bed trucks to avoid the rain-soaked ground. “My family will sleep on the truck tonight. No problem for us. We feel honored to be here already,” said Namgachi, a young herder.
“The government stands ready to provide help for pilgrims coming to temporarily live on the grassland,” said Wang Yan, deputy head of the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture government which administrates Xiahe.
Local officials say they have set up medical care booths, deployed seven trucks carrying clean drinking water, and installed about 30 pre-fab toilets on the grassland. More than a hundred traffic police are also mobilized as more and more pilgrims are arriving by car.
“We are more experienced, because a number of key religious activities are held here every year,” said Tserangji, deputy head of Xiahe county government. “Large religious gatherings with more than 10,000 turn-out were held as usual this year and all went on well.”

My opinion is that the Dalai Lama is second to none.  He is the King of the Land of Snow and Master of all masters.  No one can come close to him or of the same status as him.  Tibetans remain loyalists to the Dalai Lama.  No one can destroy or change this knowledge, fact and feeling of the world at large.   Since due to political reasons, the Dalai Lama is unable to confer the Kalachakra in Tibet/China, the conferment of Kalachakra by Panchen Lama's guru is as close or as personal as the conferment from the Dalai Lama as it can be.

What do you think folks?  Do you have any further information to share?

Opinions? Heres a couple of pennies worth-

1) I dont care who gives it. The Dharma will spread wherever there is a qualified teacher to spread it. Dalai Lama or Panchen Lama (or Panchen Lamas tutor!), if the initiation is authentic then the benefit will still be there.

2) the Chinese are really accepting of Tibetan Buddhism aye? I mean gathering 10,000 people together? I thought the Chinese werent keen on such large groups of Tibetans gathering? Or maybe security was tight. Whatevs.

3) theres room for Buddhism / Dorje Shugden to spread in China - the Tibetans are thirsty for it, and probably the Chinese government wont actively stop it. I mean if Buddhism is appearing in a state paper, they have to be accepting of it right? That, and the CTA have no say about what goes on in Tibet, whatever they like to think. Whatever the Chinese government wants, they can make happen

4) Ill never get used to Zhaxi Lhunbo Monastery as the spelling for Tashi Lhunpo!!!!

Just read news that the local government gave praise to Panchen Lama's Guru and congratulated him on the success of Kalachakra initiation! Below is a brief & summarised translation:

Zebazu (name in pinyin) Visits Panchen Lama’s Guru Jamyang Gyatso
Source: Gansu Daily

Comissioned by the Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee of Gansu, Provincial People's Congress Wang Sanyun, Zebazu of the Standing Committee of Provincial Party Committee, also of the United Front Work Department in Lanzhou recently visited Labrang’s monk, the 11th Panchen Lama’s Guru Jamyang Gyatso, and had a cordial conversation.

On behalf of the Provincial Committee, Zebazu spoke highly of Jamyang Gyatso  for playing an exemplary role in patriotism and religion, especially with the success of the Kalachakra initiation held in Xiahe County. He said, the success of the Kalachakra initiation reflects the full implementation of the party's policy of religious freedom which meets the needs of the religious beliefs of the masses of believers, wins praises from various sections of the community, and received affirmation from the Central United Front Work Department and Provincial Party Committee.

Good point Dharma Defender: the importance is that Dharma is growing and benefiting others. This is especially so in rapidly growing societies like China where the sudden and intense worldly advancement almost always cause greater disturbance of the 8 worldly concerns. I rejoice to know that people make time and effort to be a part of such a holy occasion.

Many make judgment and criticize China for being a society that only cares about material wealth and is void of spirituality. However, I would like to state from personal experience that the growth of spirituality in China is commendable compared to many other societies who have become too lazy to pursue spiritual growth. From personal observation, the people who are searching for Dharma in China are the young (between 25 to 45 years old) while the people who nurture their spirituality in developed nations are older. This is actually a hopeful sign.

It is healthy that the Chinese government recognizes the shift in its people and develops a way to enable the teachings to be disseminated. Perhaps, there is control and close monitoring of the teachings due to personal interest (of the government) but I would say that every government implements some form of control over any forms of mass communication whether secular or spiritual.

Thanks for sharing this thread. It is encouraging that the Wheel of Dharma is turning and 10s of thousands of people can be benefited at every grand gathering.

A lot of Chinese are beginning to practice Buddhism more and more. They are interested and are reviving the centuries old tradition which was practiced by their ancestors and the Emperors. The Chinese government is taking advantage of this need of the people to gain support.

This Kalachakra initiation is organised by the Government. And who is better to give it than the Panchen Lama's guru. He is a very respected lama and everyone knows him. Furthermore, the Chinese government is now promoting the Panchen Lama to the Chinese. He is included in the Chinese Party gatherings and also met Premier Wen Jia Bao. While the boost up the popularity of the Panchen Lama, they hope that the support for the Dalai Lama would decrease. This is because the government believes that the Dalai Lama is a cause of disharmony amongst its people.

The success of this initiation shows that the government's efforts are bearing fruits. With the Panchen Lama being so young, his influence will grow further as he ages. In contrary, the Dalai Lama is already in his golden years.

As long as Buddhism benefits the people, there should be no difference in who is giving the initiation.

One thing's for sure is that China gives religious freedom as long as it doesn't threaten national security. They even support and promote Panchen Lama for so many years so that the country remains unified (or so it seems). In order to counter the Dalai Lama's influence, China's Panchen Lama has been made a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, one of the country's highest political bodies.

Most exiled Tibetans do not recognize him and many Tibetans are angry about Chinese rule and what they say are Beijing's efforts to suppress their traditions and religion. However, if you think of it, do you think the CTA or the Tibetan government would spend or rather would be able to spend so much in publicising the Panchen Lama like the Chinese do so effectively? China even organised three World Buddhist Forums so that the Panchen Lama can be highlighted. Such is their passion to 'promote' religion, for selfish reason albeit, but with success that can be seen.

On the contrary, what happens to the Tibetan side? We have not heard much about the Tibetan Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, except that he is safe in Tibet, and does not want to be disturbed. What else can be done to 'resurrect' this Panchen Lama even if he's real? Chinese authorities took him into custody 17 years ago. 17 years and nothing can be done about it! China is too powerful. Anything China wants, China gets and will get away with it.  8)

What an auspicious view of thousands of Sangha members attending the Kalachakra by Jamyang Gyatso. Great to see the Dharma being spread into the ten directions.

I think it really does not matter whether this is a counter measure used by the Chinese against the Dalai Lama, so long as the Dharma can be spread to more places and people. Some people might not be able to attend the Kalachakra initiation by His Holiness and this is definitely a good effort by the Chinese and Panchen Lama to give others an opportunity to receive the initiation.

Having said that, there are still some slight doubts regarding this matter. I did a short research about the Panchen Lama’s guru, Jamyang Gyatso, but did not find much information regarding his bio, lineage and practise. Although the vast presence of Sangha members who attended the initiation might show the validity of the teaching, is it still important to investigate a Guru thoroughly before receiving any teachings? Any info on this?

This is very interesting because as the CTA accuses China of denying Tibet of its religious freedom, here we can see very clearly that there are still monks that are being trained in the traditional ways. Students of Trijang Rinpoche and Pabongkha Rinpoche who remained in Tibet continued their practice and now they are coming out to teach and nurture the next generation of sangha! And this post is the proof of that. I really rejoice that China has managed to keep Tibetan Buddhism alive today, although they commercialized the monasteries, but still there are exam debates and there are proper lineages that survive up to this day.
