It is a Gelug specialty to only worship/propitiate enlightened Protectors. Hence, it is said that Gaden monastery only allow shrines to awakened Deities. However, due to the relationship with the Dalai Lama, Nechung has seen increasing patronage within Gelug circles. However, he is still not placed on the same altar as Yidams or other enlightened Protectors.
It is said that one's refuge will degenerate if we pray or worship worldly beings and protectors because our refuge vows specifically mention that we only take refuge to the 3 Jewels. However, it is not wrong to make offerings to worldly deities that we have been propitiating all along especially those we have been propitiating before meeting the Dharma. But do not make requests for anything if we want to upholding our refuge vows and commitments.
