For over 25 years, Sri Lanka was caught in a civil war between the government and the Tamil Tigers. This had caused significant hardships for the population, environment and the economy of the country. It was estimated that about 100,000 people were killed during its course.
Sri Lankans had found the freedom and peace they had longed for after the end of this civil war in May 2009. The country had clearly suffered enough and wanted to live in peace and harmony. Any form of communal violence will not be tolerated anymore! Extreme religious group like Buddhist Force is not welcomed in Sri Lanka as it is causing tension and conflict between the Buddhists and Muslims in the country.
It is commendable that the government had appointed a parliamentary select committee to study whether religious extremism had infiltrated Sri Lankan society.
What is not right is for the Buddhist monks to incite religious hatred and violence in the country! Isn’t Buddhism about loving kindness and compassion and not about hatred and violence?
