It really is quite an interesting statement from the Dalai Lama, although whether it will translate to any tangible efforts towards resolving the Sino-Tibetan conflict remains to be seen. With China, peace and order has always been their priority. So, if CTA is serious about moving towards a real compromise with China to resolve this issue, CTA should start by ceasing to perpetuate the segregation and disharmony within Tibetans with the Dorje Shugden ban.
By removing the ban, it can serve to remove one of the major stumbling blocks. It actually quells China’s suspicion of the Dalai Lama as a dangerous separatist intending to trigger unrest in China by manipulating the Tibetan’s devotion to him as means to force China’s hand.
Further, in the past, CTA has given China every excuse to be vary of CTA’s sincerity in this matter given that CTA kept disparaging China with the Dorje Shugden controversy whilst purportedly trying to negotiate with them. It doesn’t take a genius to know that it would be hard to believe in having good faith negotiations when in the midst of negotiation, you take every opportunity to disparage the other party. Take for example, calling Dorje Shugden practitioners as traitors working for the big bad enemy China who is destroying Tibet or painting China in a very bad light in the eyes of the world really doesn’t help further any negotiations.
Since CTA always professes to give effect to Dalai Lama’s intention, hopefully CTA can back up their words now with appropriate actions taking cue from the Dalai Lama’s recent statement. Of course, it would be ideal if His Holiness would expressly tell CTA to give religious freedom to Dorje Shugden practitioners and stop their persecutions. With the statement being left vague, it would hardly be surprising should CTA opts to manipulate the situation to serve CTA's interest (instead of really giving effect to Dalai Lama's intention).
