King, Nation Mourn Passing of Buddhist Spiritual leader
« on: October 25, 2013, 05:57:20 AM »
The nation of Thailand a strong Buddhist nation is mourning.  Its Supreme Patriach has passed into paranirvna on 24th October at the Chulalongkorn Hospital.  A long line of Buddhists formed at Chulalongkorn Hospital on Friday morning waiting as early as 6am to pay final respects to His Holiness.
The public can attend the bathing rites before a picture of the Supreme Patriarch at the Manusayanak Witthayatharn Building in the compound of Wat Bowon Niwet from 1pm daily.

The Thai King has acknowledged the death of His Holiness with deep sorrow, the Royal Household Bureau said in a statement issued last night. His Majesty instructed that the Supreme Patriarch's body should lie in state at Phra Tamnak Petch at Wat Bown Niwet in Bangkok and that palace officials must wear black for 15 days starting Friday.

Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, who headed Thailand’s order of Buddhist monks for more than two decades and was known as the Supreme Patriarch, died Oct. 24 at a hospital in Bangkok. He was 100.

Doctors at Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital announced the death and said the immediate cause was septicemia, a severe blood infection.

After he was admitted to the hospital in 2002, the Supreme Patriarch was able to perform leadership duties for a time, but in 2004, a senior Buddhist monk was appointed to work on his behalf. That monk died this year, raising speculation about who the Supreme Patriarch’s successor will be.

His successor will be formally appointed by Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Thailand is the world’s most heavily Buddhist country, with more than 90 percent of its 67 million people followers of the religion. As the head of the religion, the patriarch has legal authority to oversee different sects of Buddhism.

The Supreme Patriarch promotes Buddhism and leads the Sangha Supreme Council, which oversees the country’s Buddhist monks and novices of all sects. The council’s job is to make sure monks follow Buddha’s teachings and do not violate the rules set by the council.

The Supreme Patriarch was a friend of the Dalai Lama of Tibet, who called the Thai monk “my elder brother.” The Dalai Lama paid several visits to Thailand since his first state visit in 1967, and each time, he would visit the temple where the Supreme Patriarch resided to have a discussion.

The Supreme Patriarch was born Charoen Gajavatra on Oct. 3, 1913, in Thailand’s western province of Kanchanaburi, the eldest of the three sons. He was still a boy when his father died, and he was raised by his aunt.

He became gravely ill as a boy, and his family made a promise to sacred spirits that he would become a monk if he recovered. He did, and he became a novice when he turned 14.

The future Supreme Patriarch moved to Bangkok in 1929 to a well-respected Buddhist temple to continue his religious studies.

He returned briefly to his home town to get ordained and became a monk in 1933. He was named Suvaddhano — “one who prospers well” — by the Supreme Patriarch of the time, and rose through the ranks of the monkhood. In 1956, when King Bhumibol spent 15 days as an ordained monk, the future patriarch taught and supervised him.

He served as secretary of the Supreme Patriarch who preceded him and was appointed the top Buddhist monk in 1989, when he took on the name Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara — “a person of great insight.”

It is indeed very sad news, and we pray for His quick rebirth and turn the Dharma wheel again very soon and benefit many others.

Many high monks in Thailand (and of course around the world) has shown miracles after they have passed into clear lights.. There are high monks where they have passed into clear lights for many years but the body still remain intact and people still make offerings to them.

The Supreme Patriach has spent his life learning and teaching Buddhism and upholding his vows as a monk in order to benefit others. That is a wonderful gift to all sentient beings . May he have a swift and good rebirth in his next life.

It is indeed sad to know that the Supreme Patriarch has passed away.  May He have a good and swift rebirth to be born in a world of Dharma.

He lived to a very ripe age of 100, having spent almost his whole life engaged in dharma. Truly a great example to his people.

This is the first time i know about the Supreme Patriarch. Read about his life as a monk and how strong his dharma imprints were when he was at a young age. As a leader of the thousands and millions of Theravadan Buddhists, the whole of Thailand including the Royal family are mourning for the next 15 days from 24 Oct onwards.

This is indeed sad news to hear of the passing of a Buddhist Spiritual leader who lived to a ripe old age of 100 years. The Supreme Patriach had lived most of his life engaging in dharma; learning and teaching the dharma which has benefited many.  May he take a swift and good rebirth to turn the wheel of dharma again.

In deed it is a very sad news to learn that the passing yet another Buddhist teacher, but as a Buddhist we truly understand the teaching of impermanence, we were brought into this life due to our past karma. Be it good or bad, i've learned that we should maximize our previous human life in order to practice the Dharma and do not waste too many efforts in the samsaric world. Other then the teachings of the Buddha everything else is an illusion which most of us perceive it as the cause of happiness.

Below is the link to the short biography of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara:

It's sad to hear this as each generation of great monks and arhats give way to a younger generation with lesser emphasis on traditional approaches in the Dharma. I hope I am wrong but what I am trying to say is that because of the pervasive distractions of our time, great and determined masters are harder and harder to come by these days. This is happening not just in the Thai Theravaden tradition but also in the Tibetan tradition as well. There are less families within the Tibetan communities are sending boys to the monastery to be enrolled and ordained when they come of age. To practice the Dharme in our lifetime is indeed more meritorious and far more difficult than a generation ago

It is truly very sad to hear of the passing of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. Another great dharma teacher has left us. After reading the link below, I realised that in Thailand, senior monks are also very much revered and respected just like in the Tibetan tradition.

Even the King of Thailand pays the highest respect to His Holiness as the King himself is a lay person.
