Shugden protesters criticized for advancing China’s agenda on Tibet

TibetanReview.net, Nov02, 2014) – Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) has on Oct 31 accused members of the “International Shugden Community” of causing great damage to the broader Tibetan issue by trying to undermining the work of the Dalai Lama. Community members, mostly Western followers of some Tibetan Buddhist teachers, have been following the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet during his ongoing visit to the USA and slandering him in protests as well as by infiltrating to try to disturb the audiences at his meetings.

ICT said the Chinese Government looks upon the Dalai Lama as the source of their inability to legitimize their rule in Tibet and had been attempting to sever his connection with the Tibetan people. And the Shugden demonstrators have been contributing to the fulfilment of the Chinese Communist Government’s agenda of undermining the authority of the Dalai Lama with their actions. It accused the Shugden demonstrators of trying to create seeds of discord and confusion among the public by using terms like religious freedom, human rights, etc. to define their issue.

ICT has suggested that if the Shugden demonstrators were genuinely concerned about religious freedom and human rights of the Tibetan people, they would serve the cause better by working to alleviate the plight of the Tibetans in Tibet, rather than focusing on their parochial interest. As regards the Shugden controversy, ICT said it was complex and people needed a deeper understanding of it.

The Dalai Lama has said the 17th century-originated Tibetan spirit called Shugden, also known as Dolgyal, is a malevolent spirit and worshipping it is both un-Buddhist and religiously divisive. While the mainstream Tibetan Buddhists have taken his advice to heart, a few with strong historical ties to it disagree, claim that the Dalai Lama has thereby banned the practice, and accuses the exile Tibetan administration at Dharamshala, India, of discriminating against worshippers of the spirit. Both have denied the accusations and demanded concrete substantiation of the claims.

The making of a Shugden hub in the United States
By Thierry Dodin / TIN
November 3, 2014

In early October 2014, followers of the Dorje Shugden cult dedicated a monastery in the United States, which they plan as their major American hub. The event, attended by many Shugden figures worldwide, marks a major step forward in the cult’s attempt to establish itself and expand in North America, which by now has become home to a significant Tibetan Diaspora. To date, the followers of the cult have typically been weaker in the United States compared to Europe.

The monastery, situated on 150 acres in Bloomington, Indiana, was actually created in 2007 under the name Gaden Kachoe Shing, but has only now become fully operational through the opening of its main temple. Circumstances indicate how the Shugden leadership is planning its U.S. expansion.

Bloomington is an important seat of Tibetan and Central Asian studies as well as Buddhist learning. In the mid-1960s, the elder brother of the Dalai Lama, the late Taktser Rinpoche, was invited to teach at Indiana University. He spent the rest of his life there. Bloomington is also a center of ethnic Mongolian exiles. Notably, most of the ethnic Mongolian Buddhists are from the Gelugpa lineage, the supremacy of which the Shugden cult emphasizes. Hence, the area offers, in principle, a good environment for the proliferation of the Dorje Shugden practice.

Indeed, Shugden followers have been trying to establish a strong center in Bloomington for a long time, and in particular, have been looking for a prominent figurehead. During the 1990s, for instance, they tried to get Taktser Rinpoche, himself, to take up this role, but he refused. Even though he had some political disagreement with his illustrious brother, the Dalai Lama, Taktser Rinpoche fully endorsed his policy on Shugden. Later, the Shugden group tried to attract another prominent Gelugpa lama in the US – Geleg Rinpoche – but was rebuffed.

Bloomington’s Shugden followers now have a full-fledged monastery, and they have also convinced a notable lama to become their leader. This lama is Trijang Rinpoche, the reincarnation of one of the two tutors of the Dalai Lama, who was a most active proponent of Shugden for several decades, first in Tibet, then in exile.

For years, the new incarnation of Trijang Rinpoche has lived a confused life, torn between the Dalai Lama’s disapproval of Shugden worship and the Shugden followers in his entourage, who urged him to follow in his predecessor’s footsteps. Eventually, he left both the monkhood and India entirely, settling instead in Vermont State and staying out of the public’s eye. Even today his website avoids mentioning the deity Shugden directly, while it does display a dedication letter by the Dalai Lama for the Vermont center, dated 2007.

More recently, however, other Shugden lamas succeeded in convincing the young Trijang Rinpoche to return to the fold to take a leading role in their community. His pompously orchestrated, recent trip to Mongolia, and now the dedication of the monastery in Bloomington, underline that he is being made the figurehead of the Shugden movement outside of the western New Kadampa Tradition (NKT). In fact, it appears that he is the only lama in the Shugden community who is addressed as His Holiness, a title normally reserved for the heads of major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

The expansion of the Shugden cult in the United States is important in the context of ongoing preparations throughout Tibetan Buddhism for the post-Dalai Lama scenario. Shugden followers, for instance, would almost certainly recognize any Dalai Lama reincarnation put forth by the Chinese government, a figurehead that will doubtlessly be rejected by much of the rest of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as by the Tibetan communities.

Former members of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) or they so called themselves NKT Survivors, and ex-practitioners of Dorje Shugden who are irritated by Shugdenists demonstrations against the Dalai Lama on the illogical ban wrote a declaration to CTA and is hosted on its website.   Do read this declaration:

"Declaration concerning the demonstrations against His Holiness the Dalai Lama"

I'm pretty sure that the protests irritate CTA and it's followers, because in a way, Dorje Shugden practitioners are tearing off their masks and showing the world the truth. This has shown how unreasonable and ignorant the CTAs are. The only reason why they keep up with the Dorje Shugden ban is because they believe that Dorje Shugden will harm His Holiness the Dalai Lama and they also believe that Dorje Shugden is a spirit which He is not. There are so many types of other spirits in the world that are harmful, why don't they just ban every single spirit worship? They are either putting down His Holiness by pointing out that He doesn't have the power to subdue spirits (which is not true) or they are saying that Dorje Shugden is not just any common "spirit".

Great! And it should. It just goes to show how undisciplined and how unpracticed they are. "hese protest surely make their ears itchy", I heard from somewhere and I certainly think that this means that the CTA will start to think twice before behaving like they used to.

I feel we need to us the ante on the protest. This has been a front of battle against the ban. This site is another front of the fight. We need a third front because I remember how cowboys drive well…cows. Drive from three directions and leave one open; the one direction that they want the cows to move to. SO perhaps the third front is from China politically or Tibet/China physically i.e. the practice become big or is a big Lama were to visit…!

Yontenjamyang, it does not only irk the eyes but also burn the heart too. In an incident like the ban, both sides are Buddhist practitioners , therefore must put their learning into practice , the Buddhist way. Cause and effect work both ways . Don’t think only the Shugdenpa had to restrain while being provoked . Similarly, the CTA and their followers too are subject to the effect of the ban. They too, should practice the instructions passed down by Lama Tsongkhapa so that making this seemingly negative incidents to have a win-win situation for us to practice .

It is really ironic, because HH Dalai Lama was giving Dharma talk in the hall, talking about compassion, 6 paramitas, etc, and His students are showing middle finger, flapping aprons, throwing bottles etc. I know the Tibetans respects HH Dalai Lama very much, and I know the demonstrators had really big signs with statements which make the Tibetans very unhappy, but that does not really give the Tibetans to behave in such uncivilized manner. This really does not represent HH Dalai Lama well at all.

I do pray that we all can reconcile, and the ban will be lifted very soon.

Yes, the Shugden protests definitely irritate the CTA and its follower very much. That’s why CTA even listed out the protestants info who are Tibetan on their website officially. http://tibet.net/2014/05/list-of-dolgyal-followers-who-protested-against-his-holiness-the-dalai-lama-in-us-and-europe/

Due to the protests, people are more aware of the Dorje Shugden issues and the discrimination that the Dorje Shugden people has been facing all these while. I agreed that they are part of the cause that will help to lift the ban. ( Reference: http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/features/the-five-causes-that-will-bring-down-the-ban/ ) Let’s hear Kelsang Rabten, the International Shugden Community’s (ISC) spokesperson, shares his thoughts on the progress the ISC has made in their efforts to bring down the ban on Dorje Shugden’s practice and the challenges that they faced: http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/the-controversy/an-exclusive-interview-with-kelsang-rabten/

I sincerely hope that the ban would be lifted so that they Shugden practitioners can practice freely and do not be discriminated and harm again.
