Tibetans rejected by Nepal
« on: August 20, 2017, 12:32:02 AM »
How many countries have rejected the Tibetans? The websites keeping a running count with that new section at the bottom of the front page (just look for "Countries Who Have Rejected Tibetans"). Pakistan was #13, they announced it just a couple of days ago, and Nepal makes #14, based on historical evidence.

From the early 1990s until 2007, some 2500 Tibetans were arriving in India each year. But towards the tail end of that period the number started falling especially after 2005, when the Nepali authorities clamped down on Tibetan refugees entering Nepal, and shut down the Tibetans unofficial refugee agency. Things only got worse after that. In 2008, the number fell to under 600 and its only fallen since. The Financial Times reported that in 2013, just 300 made it into India and if Im not wrong, last year that figure was just over 100 (but dont quote me on it as I cant find my source to confirm this).

What about the rest? They mustve used a Chinese passport to leave, just like everyone else does these days. I know many Tibetans whove gotten travel papers, left and then chucked their passports and claimed asylum. Thoughts on this?

Tibetans rejected by Nepal
By: Tsering Bruckman

In an unprecedented move back in 2005, the Nepali authorities shut down two key offices associated with the Dalai Lama in the country’s capital city, Kathmandu. It was a decision that the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA; Tibetan leadership) did not expect and it came as a shock to them. When both the Office of the Dalai Lama’s Representative and the Tibetan Refugee Welfare Office were closed, it caused a huge setback for Tibetans trying to cross over to India. Both offices had been informally used as reception centers for Tibetan refugees arriving from Tibet, but neither had been sanctioned to operate. For many years, Nepali authorities had closed one eye to their activities, allowing them to continue until finally, they received some impetus to shut down the operations. It was a decision that presented a hindrance for the CTA, who had already been making futile attempts to maintain a presence in a country that does not recognize their authority. I believe the Nepal earthquake was the key that turned the Nepalese to China. The Chinese International Search and Rescue Team was sent immediately when the disaster strike. Apart from the rescue team, the Chinese provided food, clothing, medical needs, of course, monetary support to Nepal among many other types of machinery and expertize they brought to Nepal. NO other countries, including the US, UK, India etc. helped in so many ways. The Nepalese are very thankful for the Chinese's help and naturally and logically would wish to continue this good relationship.

Apart from the Chinese's help, the Tibetans in Nepal, just like the other Tibetans in other countries, they did not contribute to the growth and betterment of the countries that kindly gave them refugee from Tibet. The Tibetan Leadership's main job is to play the victim card and ask for donations, while the Tibetans complain how unfair they are being treated in their host country. Logically speaking, why would the host need to tolerate this kind of ungratefulness?

It is about time that the Tibetans do something about their lives and be a responsible grown up. No one owes them anything. They must realise all they have received are due to His Holiness the Dalai Lama's fame and skilful means, and this is already fading.

Thanks to Tsering Bruckman for pointing these facts out to the world. While this is true, we often forget that Nepal hasn't exactly been that welcoming to the Tibetans over the years, and who wouldn't be. For all that the Tibetans have used Nepal they have not repaid their kindness in any way, just like that haven't repaid the kindness of India for being their host for since they entered exile. While recently developments in politics with more and more governments now leaning towards China, and obviously ignoring the Tibetan issue, we must not forget that these that this shift began long ago but is now beginning to get stronger.

And the central theme throughout all of these developments is China. The new growing superpower in the world, its impact cannot be downplayed. As Rowntree said:

I believe the Nepal earthquake was the key that turned the Nepalese to China.

This is a key point, one where unfortunately India didn't do so well. China knows that Nepal can be a key ally, especially against the Tibetans, and a good country in which they can make investment and do well, due to the strong tourist industry there. They were quick to act, and aided Nepal when they were in need. And this show of kindness really tipped the balance. Nepal now knows that China supports the country when they are in need, so would the Nepal care for the Tibetans? It doesn't make sense at all.

And this trend of countries realizing they don't need the Tibetans or that there is any benefit in supporting them, continues to grow. I wonder how the Tibetan leadership are going to scramble to hold the reigns of their money wagon.

Thank you, Rowntree you are absolutely on the ball.

Nepal is very grateful to the Chinese, as the Chinese came to Nepal's aid among other things that China is helping Nepal do.

Recently a few days ago Nepal is coming out from a floods, many people are struggling and the Chinese have already offered monetary assistance and announced it visibly to show their support.

http://www.firstpost.com/world/nepal-floods-china-announces-1-million-assistance-will-aid-in-reconstruction-of-hanuman-dhoka-3934043.html

If the Tibetans who have, used Nepal as a transit to escape to India, had the will and gratitude, the Tibetans would have done a lot more to help the Nepalis, when Nepalis are suffering from disaster.

Very strong stance from Nepal. They are smart... they are thinking about their future and long-term goals for the country! Nepal has been suffering for so many years and with no aid from anyone, so when China offers to help... I don't see why not. At least they will start having some electricity!

Yes DharmaSpace and Rowntree in the face of tragedies such as the earthquake and now the flood, at least China is ready to help them and quickly coming to their aid, do you see anyone else? India? Tibetan exile government - what help can they send? So why should Nepal listen or help Tibetans? So if I were the Tibetan leadership I would quickly change my tactics and STOP criticising the country that could possibly help you preserve your culture and your future. If Lobsang Sangay wants to talk about Human Rights, should start with their people in their backyard.

Yes, I agree with Nepal on rejecting Tibetans because they have only proven to be a group of trouble makers who are ungrateful and always trying to infringe upon the hospitality of the host by holding protests that can jeopardise the host's vital economic relationship with China. Since Nepal rely heavily on foreign aid and investment, it is only right that the nation protects its interests ahead of the Tibetan cause. Therefore, they should reject Tibetans for this reason. No offence to the TIbetans but all they care is themselves. Perhaps, they should consider sparing a thought for others and they might get more leeway with their issues and protests.

More and more countries are rejecting the Tibetans, I strongly believe that it is about time now that the Tibetans buck up and do something about it. They have been receiving 'donations', basically just free money from different countries especially the United States. Their refugee card will not continue to work forever, with the financial crisis which the States is facing still at the moment, Trump as a businessman will not continue to pay these Tibetans. America is not in charge of Tibet, it's not their duty to pay these Tibetans by the way. The 'president' of Tibet should really buck up and not just keep travelling to ask for free money.

Dear Gaby

While Trump has never mentioned or show any interest in the Tibetan cause, there are still Tibetan sympathizers such as Nancy Pelosi who have the power to fundraise for the CTA. It is unfortunate,

The motivation of the the CTA's officials seem to have always been    self interest. They don't care about the Tibetan refugees or the Tibetan cause. These are just tools for them to get more money, and some people still fall for it. Sad!

There will always be an audience for the Tibetans because partly of the Dalai Lama's draw and partly because of the spiritual draw of Tibetan Buddhism in general. The belief that Tibetans are peace-loving and deeply spiritual people that are incidentally bullied and their homeland taken away from them. The Tibetans rely heavily on the victim card but over time, that card is quite overused and its hard to reconcile the difference with what's happening in Tibetan society in exile.

The CTA is causing the closure of the CTA’s office in Nepal.

Their years of only thinking about themselves and what will they grow is catching up with them.
•    Many countries in the world rejected Tibetans
•    China gave Nepal economic benefits and protection. What sort of help that the Tibetans ever give even to the countries they

It's too bad for the CTA

No one wants to be bad neighbours, even to be bad neighbours who have lost their countries.

So tibetans may have caused more problems, than enhance the lives of Nepalis, speaking in general.  Then there is China, who helps out with Nepali's disasters and also helps to develop Nepal like how it does all over the world.

To have power over the world, need not rely on armaments and military only, economic power can be more invisible and less destructive, and this also helps everyone in the long run. Benefit your neighbouring countries and you also benefit also.

Nepal-China relations has improved dramatically through the years, and Tibetans will not have as much freedom as before in Nepal.

Nepali authorities banned Buddhists and the Tibetan community living in exile in the capital from celebrating the 82nd birthday of the Dalai Lama in July this year, so as not to hurt the sentiments of friendly nations. The event planned in the Srongtsen monastery in Kathmandu was called off on police order, prompting the followers of the Dalai Lama to celebrate in smaller groups elsewhere.

China and Nepal agreed last Wednesday (August 16) to boost bilateral pragmatic cooperation, especially under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, to further strengthen friendly ties between the two countries.

In the recent meeting of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang, Nepalese President Bidhya Devi Bhandari expressed appreciation for China's consistent support and assistance for Nepal's national development and post-disaster reconstruction.

The president said the Nepalese government and people cherish the traditional friendship with China and the two countries have always been good neighbors and real friends sharing good and bad times over history.
The president pledged that Nepal supports the Belt and Road Initiative put forward by China and will actively participate in the initiative to further promote bilateral pragmatic cooperation for mutual benefit.

She noted that Nepal and China have maintained frequent high-level contacts and bilateral cooperation in various fields have been carrying on smoothly. She also pledged that Nepal sticks to the one-China policy and will never allow any anti-China activities taking place on Nepalese soil.

The reality is that more and more countries are bowing to China's economic power.

Dear Prajna

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you that more and more countries are bowing to China's economic power. But I believe there is always two sides of the coin. The Tibetan government in exile has almost never done anything for anybody else. There is no benefit whatsoever for associating with the CTA except for using them as a political card to irritate China.

Countries like Nepal and India have opened their arms to welcoming Tibetans into their country, but what has the CTA done to show gratitude to these countries? With the billions of dollars they have received, they could have at least also, done something for these countries that have graciously welcomed and housed them, but instead the money that CTA has received all these years has gone to futile works and perhaps their own pockets.

Already in 2010, Nepal has shown its stance towards China, and it was only always going to lead to them being rejected as in the recently posted article. As China grows, and She is only going to keep growing, more and more will isolate CTA/its people/Dalai Lama.
