Brief abstract concerning HH's the Dalai Lama's advice regarding the practice of Dolgyal (Shugden)
Issued by the Office of Tibet, Tibet House, 1 Culworth Street, London NW8 7AF, May 2008

[On this thread is given the Dalai Lama's first main reason given to the Western public recently outlining why "after careful investigation and due thought, he discourages the worship of Dolgyal (Shugden spirit)." This was handed out to those attending the Dalai Lama's events in London and Nottingham.
Please read this and the subsequent arguments against his view.]

1. The Buddhism of Tibet originally derives from the pure tradition upheld at the ancient Indian monastic unversity of Nalanda. That tradition consists of such wonderful practices as the cultivation of an altruistic attitude and the wisdom understanding emptiness and so forth. It is an authentic tradition. If the trend to consider spirits like Dolgyal (Shugden) as of greater benefit than the Buddha goes unchecked, this pure tradition of spiritual practice will degenerate.

Ah yes, the monastic university of Nalanda, this wonderful place where the protector Setrap was propitiated.
Doesn't the great dharma protector Setrap Chen belong to the same class of protectors to which belong also Mighty Dorje Shugden and that are actually transcendent wisdom supra-mundane protectors just exhibiting the form of a worldly deity ?

And here is Trinley Kelsang's post from another thread earlier today....

So now the big buzzword is they follow the "pure Nalanda tradition", does he know who the last abbot of Nalanda happened to be?  It was Shakya Shri Bhadra, who was the previous incarnation of Buton, who was the previous incarnation of Dulzin Dragpa Gyaltsen.  There is no way around this.

We ought to keep a running response to these claims, we can't accept them...."spirit worship"....

Ha! Ha! Vinaya, Nalanda, it keeps changing.

The bottom line is that upon examination one wonders if the DL himself is not responsible for the degeneration of Tibetan Buddhism today. It would be hard to refute that the money he receives does not go into banning and buying out Shugden practitioners.  Monks are human beings too and not without temptation and feeble wills. The commercialization of Tibetan Buddhism is appalling.  Mandalas which were previously used strictly for rituals, initiations and empowerents are being made in malls in America for all to see ... as an 'art'  project.  Shopping centers have become venues for common folks to see a ritual dancing in progress as well.  At the end of the day, one has to wonder about exposure becoming overexposure.  We all know what happens when there is oversaturation in the market. People lose interest, it goes out of fashion.  Right now it's fashionable to be associated with Tibetan buddhism, Tibet and it's charming leader   ...  pretty soon the world will move on to something else.  Tibet will not longer be fashionable and neither will the Dalai Lama.

Gone are the days of true Tibetan masters.  We have a box office and worldwide hit right now ... shunning and dividing his own.  We have a political leader parading as a "simple buddhist monk" masking a symbol of peace and religious tolerance. This is quite sad actually.  I'm waiting for the next reason to come out about how it is not wise or right to do this practice, one that we owe so much to for our lineage and safekeeping of our practice.

Who's causing the degeneration of Tibetan Buddhism?  Who's causing this commercialization of Tibetan Buddhism?  Who mimics Gandhi yet creates untouchables in his own community? Who has become a celebrity because of Buddha's teachings and is basking in it's glory?  We know it is not Dorje Shugden yet he sure seems an easy target and a scapegoat.

Dear maryjane,

You have made some very important points.  The Dalai Lama is doing/responsible for everything he is accusing everyone else of. For example:

1. The Dalai Lama claims that Buddhism is degenerating into spirit worship by relying on Dorje Shugden, yet he propitiates a spirit claiming to be Nechung whom he relies on for advice.

2.  The Dalai Lama accuses the Chinese of abusing the human rights of Tibetans, yet he is abusing the human rights of Dorje Shugden practitioners worldwide.

3. The Dalai Lama is accusing Dorje Shugden practice of being 'sectarian', even though he is being sectarian by banning the practice  that was done by his holy Teachers who he says are 'wrong'.

4.  He says that Dorje Shugden practice is causing problems in Tibetan society, but all such problems exist because of the Dalai Lama's actions of demonizing practitioners of this Deity, stiring up disharmony and causing divisions where no such divisions existed before by exploiting the issues of his health and the cause of Tibetan independence, which he has no intention of achieving anyway.

5.  He says that Dorje Shugden practice is divisive, but he has divided the Sangha, something that has never happened before in the history of Buddhism on this scale.  Geshe Sopa said recently when he attended the demonstration in Oxford that what the Dalai Lama has done is worse than what the Chinese did, because the Chinese could not divide the monks, but the Dalai Lama has managed to do so. (http://www.westernshugdensociety.org/en/oxford-protests)

4.  He is trying to enforce his ban of Dorje Shugden in Tibetan society, and in Buddhist society in general, saying that people are not listening to him when he refuses to listen to the petitions of Western Shugden practitioners who simply want religious freedom for all.

There can surely be no greater example of the ugly results of mixing religion and politics than the Dalai Lama's present actions of destroying a pure spiritual tradition.

Very good points raised here and good for contemplation.

Personally I agree with the salient points and find them to be refreshing.
