Excerpt from a speech delivered by His Eminence Dagpo Rinpoche in November 1996

H.E. Dagpo Rinpoche
Below is an excerpt taken from a speech delivered by His Eminence Dagpo Rinpoche in November 1996, when he welcomed to Paris the fourteen-year-old reincarnation, Kyabje Chocktrul Rinpoche Tenzin Lobsang Yeshe Gyatso:
For the benefit of the new people who have joined us today, I will mention all too briefly the activities that have been accomplished by your predecessors, Rinpoche. The beneficial deeds of a supreme guide such as yourself are truly countless. In fact, only a Buddha endowed with the ten powers can comprehend them.

If I limit myself only to what you have dedicated yourself to doing in the Land of Snows, there would still be countless deeds to relate. There are so many wonderful and complex tales, melodies that can enthrall those with the gift of understanding, melodies that can fill them with faith. The whole topic is inexhaustible; I have given up trying to cover it. Today I will limit myself to just a few words about how, from the distant past, at all times and in all places, you have continued to work together with the Lord of the world Avalokite?vara to achieve the good of beings and to give them access to the Teachings.

To accomplish this, both of you have shown yourselves capable of every conceivable kind of relationship. You have alternated the role of Master with that of disciple, the role of donor with that of chaplain, parent, friend, or servant.

H.H. Trijang Rinpoche
From the immense ocean of deeds that you have thus carried out together, I will take a very small drop, a drop no bigger than the pearl that sparkles at the tip of a human hair, but quite enough to inspire faith. Everyone knows that our Tibet has long benefitted from the Lord of the World Avalokite?vara’s caring protection.
He appeared at different times as king or as minister, as learned pandit or as a complete siddha. Each time, he made the light of religion and culture shine brightly so as to dispel the darkness that enveloped Tibet, and each time you were at his side.

In the eighth century when Avalokite?vara manifested as the great king Trisong Detsen, you, Rinpoche, were the pandit ??ntarak?ita, the Indian monk who brought and established in Tibet the tradition of vows and religious commitment which form the basis of Buddha’s Teachings. It was you who brought to light the vast and profound systems, while assuming the shape of the victorious Padmasambhava, first among the Tantrikas. As such, you overcame the obstacles that stood in the way of spreading the Dharma on earth. It was you also who passed the profound and secret teachings to the King and his ministers (how lucky they were!) and thus justified their waiting.
When the good qualities of human beings and the doctrine declined, you were the second Buddha, well known by the name of Ati?a D?pa?k?ra ?r?jñ?na. During the middle of the eleventh century you founded the Kadampa tradition with the help of his spiritual son Dromtönpa Gyalwé Jungne, who was none other than Avalokite?vara.

In order to consolidate and spread that tradition, you soon reappeared under the name of Lang-ri Thangpa Dorje Senge, well known as the eminent guardian of bodhicitta, in other words, a bodhisattva.

H.H. Trijang Rinpoche
Some time afterwards, the good qualities of human beings diminished yet again, and the doctrine underwent another decline. You immediately assumed the shape of the second Buddha Je Tsongkhapa. That time your disciple was Avalokite?vara, later considered the First Dalai Lama. Together you took it upon yourselves to spread and expand the Teachings of the Buddha throughout the entire country.

Shortly afterwards, you were Mönlam Pelwa, one of the First Dalai Lama’s main disciples. You succeeded yourself, becoming the eighth Ganden Tripa, that is, the eighth head of the Gelugpa school.
Later on, as the head of the Kagyupa order, you were the eighth Karmapa, Mikyö Dorje, close friend of the Second Dalai Lama Gendun Gyatso.

When you returned to the school of the Nyingmapas in the seventeenth century, you were the dazzlingly brilliant light with the name of Zurchen Chöying Rangdröl, one of the Fifth Dalai Lama Ngawang Gyatso’s principal Masters.
Next, during two consecutive lives, you again took charge of the Gelug school: you were the sixty-ninth Ganden Tripa, Trichen Jangchub Chöpel, who was also the tutor of the Ninth Dalai Lama Lungtog Gyatso, and later the eighty-fifth Ganden Tripa, Trichen Lobsang Tsultrim.

And now we come to your immediate predecessor Kyabje Yongdzin Trijang Dorje Chang Chenpo, who for forty years was assistant and then tutor of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama.
Here you have a brief reminder of how and for how long you and the Buddha Avalokite?vara have been doing significant and enduring work for the benefit of sentient beings.

I felt that Dagpo Rinpoche was so eloquent to describe the qualities of Trijang Rinpoche. And it is not just mere eloquence the way and the manner in which Trijang Rinpoche is described really puts the Dharma that Trijang Rinpoche represents high up to be respected and well deserved at that. Trijang Rinpoche is already working with the 14th Dalai Lama though not directly to spread Dorje Shugden like how they have done in the past. Cant wait when they can work together openly and collaborate openly against samsara.

I enjoy this post tremendously, not only for its sublime praise of the great Trijang Rinpoche but also for the fact that the praise was delivered by H.E. Dagpo Rinpoche, who in one of his previous reincarnations was Dharmakirti / Serlinga (or Suvarnadvipa Guru in Liberation In The Palm Of Your Hand). Dhamakirti was no other than one of Atisha’s principal teachers.

It is fascinating - Dagpo Rinpoche (as Dharmakirti) taught Trijang Rinpoche (as Atisha), and later, Trijang Rinpoche (as reincarnation of Atisha) taught Dagpo Rinpoche (as reincarnation of Dharmakirti). And in that way, the teachings remain pure and uncorrupted.

In the Lamrin, we learn that Atisha who was already very attained, wanted to find out who in the world held the complete set of teachings on Bodhicitta, and was told it was Dharmakirti, a sage living on the island of Suvarnadvipa. And so Atisha sailed for over 13 months whilst facing tremendous obstacles, to receive the teachings on Bodhicitta from Dharmakirti, with whom Atisha formed a very close bond with and stayed with for 12 years.

Trijang Rinpoche is Atisha and so Bodhicitta runs deeps in the enlightened mind of Trijang. How can such a wise and compassionate and enlightened being such as Trijang (Atisha) praise Dorje Shugden if Shugden was an evil spirit? Nobody in history has ever stepped forward to discredit HH Trijang Rinpoche. No one can.

There is no way Dorje Shugden, who is so close to Trijang Rinpoche, is not an enlightened Protector.

DharmaSpace - thank you for sharing this incredible article which I appreciated very much. I learnt more about Trijang Rinpoche and the role he played in ensuring the continuous growth of Buddhism throughout the years. What was not mentioned was how Trijang Rinpoche was also Chandra, the chariot driver who helped Buddha Shakyamuni escape the palace to become the Buddha of our time. Not to mention the significance of Shantarakshita, Atisha and Tsongkhapa in today's Buddhist scene, Tibetan or not.

Whoever argues that Atisha, Shantarakshita, Tsongkhapa and his other illustrious incarnations are not enlightened, I dare you to step forward now. Just try it and you will be laughed away by all schools of Buddhism, but just the Shugden practitioners.

And why would an enlightened being propitiate Shugden's practice if he was not a Buddha and good for us? All those who have bad to say about Trijang Rinpoche should read this and take a real good look at what they are saying.

The faith and the devotion on the part of Dagpo Rinpoche alone is inspiring, not to mention his beautiful account of the many Trijang Rinpoches through history. Indeed if such a powerful being was propitiating the energies of a spirit, surely he shouldn't have reincarnated back so many times to carry on such powerful and beneficial work? Surely he should have been sucked into another darker realm by now? Why is it that people say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit, but the very lamas, like Trijang Rinpoche, who pray to him, are so powerfully GOOD?

Don't forget everyone - young or old, new or familiar! - that this website has made Trijang Rinpoche's full autobiography available for download. It makes excellent reading as a part of our a sadhana and study. The link to download here: http://dorjeshugden.com/wp/?page_id=52/#2

Interesting also, while we're on the subject of this incredible teacher, that he is the only person in the whole wide world "allowed" to do Dorje Shugden's practice. Here's the video of the Dalai Lama giving him this special exception:
Dalai Lama says Trijang Rinpoche can practise Dorje Shugden Small | Large

Doesn't it all seem a little strange?

A few questions (which I have asked before, but I think they should always be asked to keep the debate going and fresh in the minds of all those who promote the illogical reasons for the ban:

1. Why indeed would you allow the incarnation of your own dearest Guru to engage in a practice that is so "evil"?
(But he is highly realised and attained, so he will be able to control this spirit and its bad effects)

2. Ah, so if he is so highly realised and attained, with the ultimate control of his rebirths, then why doesn't Trijang Rinpoche just subdue this spirit? Bind him? Make him take an oath and control him in the same way Guru Rinpoche subdued Pehar, and the Seven Sisters of Pelden Lhamo's entourage?
(Oh, but this is a very dangerous, harmful spirit?)

3. Is that saying, therefore, that a powerful, attained being like Trijang Rinpoche - who is one with Vajrayogini - is less powerful than a spirit and cannot control it? Trijang Rinpoche is often and widely believed to be Vajrayogini. So this means that a spirit is more powerful than Vajrayogini!
(........................)

4. Also, Trijang Rinpoche is permitted to practice Dorje Shugden. But he also has students, attendants, helpers in his ladrang. They will be involved in preparing for his pujas, cleaning his statues and altars, receiving teachings from him. If he is engaging in something so terrible, don't you think it would therefore also affect all the people around him? It is impossible that Trijang Rinpoche - who is already beginning to teach and lead students - will do his DS practice (or any practices) in such complete isolation.
(........................)

5. If Trijang Rinpoche was engaged in the black art of propitiating such a negative spirit, why hasn't the negative spirit captured his soul and harmed him already? Why is it, instead, that Trijang Rinpoche is now back among us, healthy, happy and very spiritual? And, identified as the unmistaken incarnation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself!"
(........................)

So there you have it. There are many questions but many remain unanswered. They can answer only one or two questions before the logic becomes so obviously flawed and there soon become NO ANSWERS.

I echo your pleasure in reading this post. I do enjoy this wonderful post of a very high and esteemed Lama praising one of the greatest Lineage masters of our time. And from time over and again with the practice of debate on the basis of Logic, we see no fault of what this master has provided the Gaden Lineage, the monasteries, the lamas and followers are beyond measure of word!

When you indulge yourself in too much frivolity of the entire ban, chances are you just read in disgust at what is happening almost on a daily basis. It is these posts which bring colors to a morbid life full of narrow mindedness and malice.

Thank you Dharma Space for posting this up!

What I like about this beautiful "excerpt from a speech delivered by His Eminence Dagpo Rinpoche" is that He show us how by right we should be looking at this whole "Ban" issue... by just one simple last gives such great inspiration

Another highly attained Lama is telling us we are on the right track, right thoughts when we say HH the Dalai Lama and Trijang Rinpoche are working hand in hand to spread Dharma... and in fact to spread Dorje Shugden? Hence the warning given by Trijang Rinpoche himself to warn us to be mindful.... Hence if we really revere Trijang Rinpoche that we would follow as stated below and watch our minds eh ;)

" But some who are narrow minded, not understanding this point, consider this Dharmapala to be like an ordinary worldly being and, with supposed faith in the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama, disparage him; or else they indeed admire this great Dharmapala but criticize the Dalai Lama or Panchen Lama. Using either one as a reason not to admire the other and speaking badly about either in any way is the conduct of an ordinary being who, under the influence of attachment and hatred, just tries to help friends and hurt enemies; it obscures the increase of these great holy Aryas' deeds and creates the karmic cause to experience unbearable suffering in the future."

When highly attained Lamas speak eloquently of another highly attained Lama, it is with so much sincerity that it brings tears of joy to my eyes.

This short articles tells a lot of one of our great Dorje Shugden Lamas, HH Trijang Dorje Chang. Beautiful post.
