Wow! This is a beautiful little speech given by the Dalai Lama and I really like how the Dalai Lama see things. He is very broad minded about important issues. I particularly like how he has described the Tibetan and Indian spiritual relationship of a Guru and a chela. This is the traditional terms used in ancient times and I really like the spiritual connotation involved with this one.
It is true as we all know that Buddhism began in India and over time, it was brought over to Tibet. Initially, the Tibetans received masters from China and India. Due to a big debate at Samye between Indian and Chinese Buddhist master, the Indians won the debate. Henceforth, the Tibetans would only receive teachings from India. This is a famous historical fact.
Even later and during the era of Lama Tsongkhapa, the great Gaden, Sera and Drepung monasteries were found based on the Indian models of Nalanda, Vikramashila and Odantapuri. The highly evolved system of dialetics and logic was further developed in Tibet to bring about the finest masters and meditators of Buddhism. Those are just a little of what was brought of to Tibet. In fact, many of the incredible body of ancient Buddhist scriptures are extant mainly because of the translation and preservation in Tibet. Unfortunately in India, Buddhism was completely wiped out.
