Healing from God, No medicine please...

Catherine, Herbert Schaible's Second Child Dies After Parents Use Prayer, No Medicine

"Herbert Schaible, 44, and his 43-year-old wife grew up in the First Century Gospel Church in northeast Philadelphia and have served as teachers there.

The church's website has a sermon titled "Healing – From God or Medicine?" that quotes Bible verses purportedly forbidding Christians from visiting doctors or taking medicine.

"It is a definite sin to trust in medical help and pills; and it is real faith to trust on the Name of Jesus for healing," says the message, from last May
.

Faith Healing versus modern medical treatments...

Four years ago, they had also lost their other son in the similar manner, i.e. not seeking medical help for their sick 2 years old son.  Judge now ruled that they are "danger" to their seven other children.

This is rather sensitive issue as it touches on one's faith but surely we cannot have faith without considering the consequences. Faith without logical considerations is Blind Faith and it leads to disaster like in this case.

Healing and modern medicine have nothing in common. We have faith in Buddha  to heal us but we should also seek the help and advice of those who have the skills to use medicine and  or surgery.
Medicine treats natural sickness and there are people who died because of refusal to use medicine .
We know that medical science is completely powerless against spiritual forces, but medicine has been great
help in curing, helping to fight natural diseases.Because of  lack of understanding.we fall victim to our ignorance and then we go for healing, hoping that it will make all our problems go away, failing to understand the reason why we fall sick in the first place.
May the children of the couple have a good rebirth.

Yes, its just sad that people have blind faith. Whatever it is, we must always check it out before making rash decisions especially those that involves a life. I have read and heard how some people would rely on mediums that tell them to do certain things and they just do it blindly.

All the years that medical science have done research, how wrong can it be to go see a doc, get a prescription and take the meds? The meds cant be wrong. So please be smart and not ignorant.

Faith can be roughly defined as belief, trust, hope.

For this couple, since they had already lost a child in a similar fashion, it should have served as a guideline that the method did not work. I would think that they should have learned from that. Since they were serving probation for the first incident, they could have at least sought medical help first. Any sensible parent would know that a sick baby requires medical treatment if the symptoms do not go away.

It seems that they have 7 other children .. .. are they safe? Will they be safe?

Physical sickness requires physical treatments. I think relying on spiritual healing is good but with the help with medicine to speed up the healing. Relying totally on spiritual healing one needs to have the merits to be healed in such a way i supposed. Maybe for this couple having 7 children without medical help has proven to them that it worked however unfortunately it didn't work for the other 2 children.

From Buddhism perspective, "Natural Healing" is more for 'supporting' the modern medicines and treatment as well as for prevention of future occurrence.

"To heal present sickness, we have to engage in positive actions now. To prevent sickness occurring again in the future, we have to purify, or clear, the negative karmic imprints that remain on our mindstream...

Buddhism asserts that for lasting healing to occur, it is necessary to heal not only the current disease with medicines and other forms of treatment, but also the cause of the disease, which originates from the mind. If we do not heal or purify the mind, the sickness and problems will recur again and again..."

Never in Buddhists belief that we should totally avoid modern remedies or medical treatments.

But who brought the medicine, the surgery, the doctors, the 24 hours emergency services?
Did not God brought these solutions upon some of us?
If it is not God, then how did all this come to us?
God does not manifest food in our stomach, God manifests food that is available for us to eat.
So, to me, this story does not really make sense... because to refuse the help of the doctor is to refuse the help from God.

PS: for Buddhists, replace God by Karma or by DS

Exactly Hope Rainbow.
It does not make sense. Which parent in his/her right frame of mind would deprive are sick child of medical aid?

Even if you are not religious/spiritual, we know for sure that sickness needs to be medically healed.

It's just amazing to find out that why would someone who teaches would follow the so call religion which is not logical at all. Yes, we can be religious and should have faith and practice whichever religion which we think can help us to be a better person and transform. But do not adopt certain things which is illogical and could harm us or the other person. We must always carefully check on the "religious" group and make sure they practice the right teaching from the original source. eg. as Buddhist we must check on the lama and his teaching in order to make sure it is from the right source in this case The Buddha. Never follow blindly, as medicine exists for a reason .
