To Set Up Dorje Shugden Statue at Nagarjuna Caves?
« on: January 01, 2014, 06:16:48 AM »
RAIPUR: Tibetian spiritual leader Dalai Lama is all set to meditate at the historic Nagarjuna caves near the banks of river Mahanadi at Sirpur on January 14. During his three-day visit to Chhattisgarh from January 13, to attend an international peace conference at Ravishankar Shukla University, the spiritual guru would inaugurate a seminar on Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna and his writings.

During his previous visit to Sirpur caves this year, he had promised to return and meditate at the Nagarjuna caves, located around 15 kilometres away from Sirpur in Mahasamund district on the banks of Mahanadi. As Dalai Lama considers Nagarjuna his master, he decided to meditate in the cave where his master did during the Satvahana rule.

Talking to TOI, prominent archaeologist Arun Sharma said, "The cave is more than 200 metres deep on the hill called Shivha-Dhurva. The place has many caves of various sizes. This region has a sculptured gate and remains of old palaces of Sarabhpuriya's reign during 5th century. Nagarjuna visited this place in second century BC following which many famous monks and Buddhists also visited the caves. Literary evidence shows Buddha also meditated in one of the caves here in 6th century BC and also preached in Bajaar area here."

Sharma said the evidence was found in a travelogue written by Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang who visited Sirpur in 639 AD. "Later, a Buddh-vihar (Budh-monastry) was constructed by the Buddhists at this place where a Buddha idol is sitting in a meditating pose." Many temples and Buddhist monasteries were excavated from the spot.

After Nagarjuna offered his prayers to Buddha and meditated in the case, people started calling it Nagarjuna cave. Eventually local tribe Gond people had set up an idol of Devi which has also created a controversy after Dalai Lama announced his meditation.

People initially protested about the Buddhist monk meditating in their territory where they worship their goddess. "But they were convinced about Dalai's motive of simply meditating at the spot as his master Nagarjuna had done the same there," Sharma said.

When I read this news of Nagarjuna Caves, my antenna shot up - why not set up Dorje Shugden at the site similar to what the local people had set up their Devi there.

Surely it will be the most appropriate and significant protector of all times to Nagarjuna's teaching.  Since the Dalai Lama has acknowledged Nagarjuna as his master wouldn't Dalai Lama need Dorje Shugden at the site during his meditation?

Hahaha that would be an interesting site to see how HHDL would react seeing a Dorje Shugden statue or chapel there. I think it's a brilliant idea if this can be done!

Besides it would be a great blessing to all those who visit the Nagarjuna site daily. It's a perfect spot for Dorje Shugden since he is the protector of Nagarjuna's teachings.  ;)

Yes it would be an interesting scene... imaging a Dorje Shugden statue there when HH Dalai Lama goes there to meditate. The anti-DS camp and the CTA group would be in for a shock. It is feasible as I am sure there will be many DS practitioners willing to help set up a shrine with a huge DS statue.

Besides that, the more important motivation of setting up a shrine there is to bring DS practice to the people who will be visiting the cave. This definitely will help whomever come in contact with this powerful protector. Even for someone who does not know about the controversy, it will help them tremendously. Dorje Shugden practice is a complete practice that can help us to the ultimate goal of enlightenment.

I think it is not a good idea because the Hindus are already sensitive to a Buddhist monk - the Dalai Lama meditating near their shrine to the Devi. If someone erects a Dorje Shugden shrine nearby, it would only serve to enrage the Hindus. This is not a good move as it would increase opposition towards Dorje Shugden.

This move would only serve to further demonize Dorje Shugden lamas and practitioners. Therefore, it is not worth the undertaking as the only benefit seems to be just to irk the Dalai Lama. As practitioners, we should gear every idea to further the cause of Dorje Shugden's practice and not sink down to petty attempts to irk the Dalai Lama and CTA especially when it comes with such a heavy price of irking other groups.

I think it would be very challenging and interesting to set up a Dorje Shugden Statue at Nagarjuna Caves as what the local people set up their own Devi there.
More people will be exposed to Dorje Shugden and will be curious about it.
And it is appropriate also since Dorje Shugden is to protect Nagarjuna's teaching.

:o Dorje Shugden is a the uncommon protector of Je Tsongkhapa's teachings on the wisdom of emptiness, which is based on Nagarjuna's middle way doctrine. Therefore, I am sure whether a statue of DS is errected or not at Nagarjuna's cave, the great protector is there in "spirit". However, I do agree with Big Uncle that it is not really a good idea to do so because it may give DS practitioners a bad name if it is to simply irritate the Dalai Lama. But if it is done out of reverence and piety, then, a shrine of Dorje Shugden at the cave is perfect.  ;)

Good point, Manisha. At first i thought it was a good idea to irritate the Dalai Lama then your post woke me up. Motivation is everything and sometimes I forget that. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't think so Big Uncle.  Indians are sweet and have much religious tolerance than most races in the world.    If you had stayed long enough in India you will have different views about them.

It is feasible to have DS statue on the site.  It might irk the Dalai Lama but not the Hindus.  Hindus can accept DS as another DEVI.

Totally agreed with you, whether a DS statue is set up or not does not matter as HIS presence is there. However, having a Dorje Shugden shrine will bring tremendous benefits and blessings to many people.

This is what the Dalai Lama said about Nagarjuna Caves: "This place is full of natural beauty. My guru Nagarjuna meditated here and I felt his presence here today. It was very peaceful,”
