Chushi Gangdruk
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:04:19 AM »
I was told this story a while back about how the Chushi Gangdruk was formed in 1956, under the command of Dorje Shugden, and lord Dorje Shugden asked the people to form this movement or they should not propitiate him anymore. And three years later in 1959 they proved their use when they safely escorted His Holiness the Dalai Lama into India.

When the Dalai Lama asked Trijang Dorjechang to find out from Dorje Shugden whether he should stay or leave, Trijang Dorjechang had the oracle of Panglung to take trance and the protector said he guarantees Dalai Lama's safety if he left immediately. And the Chushi Gangdruk with 33 Sera Monks and abbot (the monks wore lay clothes and carried firearms) escorted the Dalai Lama to the safety of India's borders.

So the well being and life of the Current Dalai Lama was saved by Dorje Shugden, so why would Dorje Shugden be a hindrance to Dalai Lama's life now? Dorje Shugden saved the Dalai Lama so the Dalai Lama can bring prestige to Buddhism and spread Kalachakra all over the globe. Nechung on the other hand had told the Dalai Lama to stay. The extent Norbulingka was shelled by the Chinese was an indication of how wrong Nechung was.

If Trijang RInpoche predicted that in the future the Dalai Lama and Dorje Shugden look to be at odds at each other, we must never criticise both and still maintain faith as both are working hand in hand. Chenrezig and Manjushri working together.

Thank you for sharing, DharmaSpace. This short video is the eye witness testimonial of Dorje Shugden's advice to HH the Dalai Lama. I still find the situation re Dorje Shugden saving HH Dalai Lama's life in 1959 vs Dorje Shugden shortening HH Dalai Lama's life completely contradictory. Therefore, HH Trijang Rinpoche's advice is the only logical conclusion.

Advice from Dorje Shugden that His Holiness should leave and that He guarantees H.H. safety Small | Large

I found Chushi Gangdruk has their own website! However, in their history, they do not attribute their formation to Dorje Shugden. How sad. They do mention that their emblem has a sword of Manjushri - perhaps that is their only concession to Dorje Shugden.

http://www.chushigangdruk.org/history/history01.html

Background

When the Communist Chinese government ordered its so-called People's Liberation Army (PLA) to march into Tibet in 1949, the people of Tibet's eastern region were the first to experience the threat of Chinese invasion. The people of Kham and Amdo rose up and confronted the Chinese army at the onset of the invasion of our motherland. Pitched battles were fought under the command and banner of local chieftains. However, there was no proper organization and strategy, no unity, and only uncoordinated efforts to combat the common enemy were made.

In 1956 the Chinese introduced the so-called “Democratic Reforms” in Kham starting with the eastern region of Tibet. They began to impose communist ideology and destroyed Tibetan religion and culture. They conducted mass arrests and executions of Tibetan religious leaders and other prominent leaders. People of these areas could not tolerate the brutal Chinese atrocities and rose up in arms against them. Disorganized and ill-equipped volunteer fighters could not withstand the mighty Chinese army that overwhelmed them, grasped their territory and spread like oil drops on paper. Volunteer defenders gradually retreated toward Central and Western Tibet.

Kalachakra Initiation

By 1957 a large number of volunteer defenders from various parts of the eastern region of Tibet had gathered around Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The Khampas felt the need to form a united organization to confront the Communist Chinese aggression. But by that time, the Chinese had started to exert pressure and our government's position was rather helpless.

So, in order to evade Chinese suspicion and surveillance on our activities and also to enable the different groups of the defenders to come in close contact with each other, the late Andruk Gonpo Tashi from Lithang and other leaders from the eastern regions made a camouflage plan to make extensive religious offerings at Lhasa.

Accordingly, with the consent of the Tibetan government, the preparations for making the now famous golden throne of Chushi Gangdruk for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama were underway. Then the leaders made a request to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to bestow the Kalachakra Initiation and His Holiness kindly accepted the request. However, since a similar request had been made earlier by one Amdo Jimpa Gyatso, the two parties co-sponsored the Second Kalachakra Initiation in 1957.

In appreciation of the Initiation and for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a grand Tenshuk (Longevity) Offering Ceremony was performed by the Khampas. The offering of Tenshuk to His Holiness on the new golden throne was meant to symbolize the enthronement of His Holiness as ruler of the entire Tibetan territory and also for reaffirmation of faith in His Holiness as supreme being.

Formation

Meanwhile the Khampa volunteer leaders were having secret meetings, busy in laying out future plans and strategies. As a result of their common efforts it was finally and unanimously decided to form a united resistance organization against the common enemy, the Communist Chinese aggression. The leaders then signed a statement pledging their commitment to risk everything to resist the Communist Chinese. Upon the completion of religious ceremonies, the Khampa leaders and volunteer members gradually moved out of Lhasa in different routes towards the Lhokha area, south of Lhasa, and eventually assembled at Chaktsa Dri-Guthang (Chosen Rendezvous). The formal announcement of the formation of the Chushi Gangdruk (Land of Four Rivers and Six Ranges) Defend Tibet Volunteer Force was made on the 16th of June 1958 and since then it is commemorated every year to mark the anniversary of Chushi Gangdruk. It was the first time that all the regions of Kham and the Khampas of all regions came together under one organization and fought under one banner since the splitting up of Tibet during the reign of the last and evil King, Lang Tharma. Chushi Gangdruk included people from both Kham and Amdo regions, but since the number of Amdos were small , they served as one of the 37 allied forces in the organization. Later in exile, Amdo withdrew from the allied organization to form an Amdo party.

The leaders then turned their attention to the choice of formation insignia of the organization and the colour of the banner or the flag. After long debate they finally agreed upon and designed the organization's insignia as a crossed sword on a yellow background. The significance of the background being such is that the Buddhist colour is yellow and the organization's main intention was to defend Buddhism from Chinese Communism. The symbolic reasons for crossed swords were that the flaming sword representing the wisdom sword of Manjushree severs the roots of ignorance which was the root cause of communism. The other sword was the symbol of bravery and it was the only weapon that the Khampas or the Tibetans themselves could make.

A great deal of importance was attached to it because in 1944, when a Tibetan delegation to the Afro-Asian Conference in Delhi made a point to meet Mahatma Gandhi, founder of the non-violence movement, as a traditional way of greeting the delegation it offered him white scarves, but Ghandhiji wanted to know if the scarves were made by the Tibetans. When told that they were from China, he refused to take them, saying that he would like only something that the Tibetans themselves made with their own hands and methods.

Interesting to know this was the private army formed by Dorje Shugden to prepare for the Dalai Lama's great escape. Seems like Ds prep and paved the way for the Dalai Lama to be saved. If Dorje Shugden was really harmful and would take Dalai Lama's life... this would have been the perfect opportunity, so why help if he was a bad demon? And sure seems strange that Nechung which is the TGIE main oracle deity seem to advise the opposite, imagine if Dalai Lama did listen to Nechung, there would not be a Dalai Lama today. Tibetan politics and story telling sounds really lame.

Checked out the website and can see why they would probably not give credit or even deny that they were officially formed because of Dorje Shugden's advise. Looks like they've got their fingers stuck in the political mud pie...such a funny web banner... thought Obama was the president now.

Also, if Dorje Shugden had such powerful clairvoyance to prepare the very guards that will escort the Dalai Lama out of Tibet, he would also know that the Dalai Lama would one day impose this very ban upon his practice. He must see the Dalai Lama for who he really is - 'The Holder of the Lotus' or Chenrezig. In other words, he see his immense potential to benefit the world by bringing Buddhism to the far corners of the globe. He must hold on to a special aspiration when he has enforced this ban. They must be helping each other to reach out the masses!

The irony is the Tibetan movements soooooo proud of Chushi Gangdruk (as they should be) but step down on the very person who formed this group. But without Dorje Shugden, the Tibetan movement would have no country or Dalai Lama to fight for.

Forgive me if Im wrong but I thought the swords were those of Manjushri AND Dorje Shugden? So just saying their emblem has a sword of Manjushri concedes nothing about their link with Dorje Shugden.

Nice try at being nice WB :)

As explained above:

The truth is that Dorje Shugden was not "optional" to the creation of Chushi Gangdruk.

The truth is that Chushi Gangdruk would NOT have come to existence without the impulse and perseverance of Dorje Shugden for it.

I found these short video clips about HH the Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet. These videos promote the CIA’s role in the Dalai Lama’s escape but I would like to share these clips not because of the politics but because:

1.   They show footage of the Chushi Gangdruk
2.   In Part 3, it says that 50,000 troops searched for the Dalai Lama and they couldn’t find him when there was only one road? Only Dorje Shugden could have hidden the Dalai Lama and his 37 strong entourage from such a large land and air search force.
3.   At the end of this video, it states that the Chushi Gangdruk went back to Tibet – such bravery of the troops commanded by Dorje Shugden.

Thanks for sharing WisdomBeing.

I find it really cool how the escape was made into a documentary, it almost gives a mysterious, eery, and alien like feel to the whole escape. Almost as if the documentary was talking about something supernatural. After all it is amazing how 50,000 soldiers could not find one man. The whole mystery behind it is so intriguing and interesting. Of course, you know why? Dorje Shugden is behind it all. There we go all the unexplained, explained.

You are right jeremyg. It is really intriguing and almost mystical as you said regarding how Dalai Lama escaped.

There is another post in the forum which provides a bit more details, do click and read it.

http://www.dorjeshugden.com/forum/index.php?topic=1531.0

In this post, it is said that Dalai lama asked his guru Trijang Rinpoche to lend him the sacred Dorje Shugden thangka for his escape from Tibet to India(the tangkha now is still kept in Trijang's ladrang in Gaden Monastery), knowing that Dorje Shugden would keep him and his entourage safe.

So all these nonsense about Dorje Shugden being an evil spirit trying to harm Dalai Lama's life is so illogical. If Dorje Shugden wanted to harm Dalai Lama's life, why wait till now??  ::)

I always like accounts of the Chshi Gandgruk.

I am more convinced than ever that HHDL and Dorje Shugden are in collaboration even now. There is no way HHDL can forget that it was actually Dorje Shugden whom the HHHDL relied upon during probably the bleakest period of his life as a human. Even an ordinary person will never forget important people in their lives. So how can Chenrezig forget and turn against the Protector sworn to protect Tsongkhapa's teachings and who saved the human life of Chenrezig's emanation.

I cannot get the poignant image of the young Dalai Lama riding out away from his home and people and Dorje Shugden on his back.

Chushi Gangdruk's formation was initiated by Dorje Shugden and it represented a united Tibet. I wonder if Chushi Gangdruk will be instrumental again in harmonizing the people again.

I totally agree with you, Dharmaspace. There’s so much proof that it was Dorje Shugden who paved the necessary conditions for HHDL to escape.   Dorje Shugden even commanded and asked the people to form Chushi Gangdruk to ensure HHDL safety.  HHDL even asked his Guru, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche to lend him a thangka of Dorje Shugden as a protection during the escape.

So if Dorje Shugden is a spirit why should HHDL asked for the sacred thangka?  If Dorje Shugden has intention of harming HHDL, why should he help HHDL in the first place? He would have asked HHDL to stay back in Norbulingka.

My faith gets stronger and stronger as I learned up more and more from this website to understand how these two great beings are compassionately working hand in hand to benefit others. I believe that the  true picture will be revealed when the ban is lifted.

What i learned from some old chushi gangdruk soldier  that the name CHUSHI GANGDRUK was give by Kyabje Trijang rinpoche. Initially the group was called - Khamrik ......... which has connotation that the party is comprised of member from certain region.... excluding U-tsang. Perhaps seeing this , Kyabje Rinpoche renamed the group -chushi gangdruk - The land of four river and six ranges.- which includes the whole of Tibet. Top leaders of that time - likes of  andruk gompo tashi , were all  Shugden practitioner.

Imagine the look of the anti Shugden people if they found out the truth? Lord Dorje Shugden helped Dalai Lama escape Tibet! How ironic! This is the gratitude that DS get for helping the DL safely arrive in India? Being banned and called a demon? I also heard that out of the big group that left, less than half arrived including the DL. Why would DS help DL safely to India and try to kill DL now? Does it make sense?

Wow, I loved reading the background on the Chushi Gangdruk, its formation. Thanks Wisdom Being for posting it up.. I went to the website to read the article "Escape of His Holiness".. very interesting. I am particularly thankful/grateful on how fast the Indian Government responded to welcoming HHDL and entourage to seeking asylum in India. It shows what kind of people they are and how much they value spirituality, Buddhism, and HHDL. Imagine if the Indian government did not accept the request.. I wonder what would've happened? But I guess Dorje Shugden wouldn't let HHDL get into any danger. The entire escape journey of HHDL from Norbulingka to India seemed to have gone very smoothly for HHDL. I wonder why?..hehe.

Also, I am very amazed at how 50,000 troops of CHINA can not locate and stop HHDL and his small entourage. What more the Chinese had the help of airfore.. and yet, they cannot locate HHDL. Guess why? Because it was Dorje Shugden who advised on the escape route to take...and it brought HHDL to safety. Talk about compatibility and working together.
