Short Sadhana
« on: February 16, 2008, 05:16:24 AM »
I would like to recite the short Dorje Shugden sadhana but the usual custom is to have the author's name at the end in a post-script, here there is none.   Can anyone tell me who authored this short sadhana on this site, or where it came from   Thank you.

It's taken from the kangso compiled by Pabongkha Dechen Nyingpo entitled Melodious Drum Victorious in All Directions.

P.S: Actually, a better translation of this title is probably: The Drum Sounding the Hymn of Victory in All Directions.

Im writing this for the benefit of people who may stumble upon this topic via a search engine...

To elaborate on Alexis response, Pabongka Rinpoches composition came from his lama Taghu Pemavajra (http://www.dorjeshugden.com/introduction/spiritual-lineage/descended-from-tushita/) who went to Tushita and received the practice from Dorje Shugden himself.

Theres a story about Manjushri and Ganglongma which is that when the sadhana was written, the high lamas and geshes of Nalanda went to sleep one night having prayed to Manjushri for inspiration. When they woke up the next day and gathered, everyone had written down the same praise overnight. So the Ganglongma sadhana carries with it Manjushris power and blessings.

Since something like that is possible, why is it not possible for Taghu Pemavajra to ascend to Tushita, and receive the transmission of the practice from Dorje Shugden himself? If it is possible for lamas to have visions (e.g. Lama Yeshes psychic abilities are very well-recorded), why isnt it possible for Pabongkas teacher to have the same?

Hi all,
for the benefit of people looking to do Dorje Shugden prayers, if you like, you can also just recite the praises that have been written over time by various lamas. For example, if you already have a protector practice, you can incorporate Dorje Shugden into your daily prayers, by reciting one of the praises and his mantra; OR if you're a real beginner to the prayers and/or don't have much time, you can also just start your day with one of the praises and mantra. Sometimes, if you are in an urgent situation or just before starting an important job / project, it would be very good if you can recite the praise written Trijang Rinpoche, known as "Dothey" or light a lot of incense and recite the incense / sang offering. Here are quick links to the prayers!

It is important to know which sadhanas of Dorje Shugden we can practice on our own.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche explains in his commentary Heart Jewel that anyone with faith can practice the the common (short) sadhana of Dorje Shugden regardless of whether or not they've received Highest Yoga Tantra initiation or an initiation of Dorje Shugden. If we wish to practice the middling or extensive sadhanas we need to have received Highest Yoga Tantra initiation because in these sadhanas we are engaging in actions that can only be performed while we are self-generated as our Yidam such as blessing offerings, mantra recitation, dispelling hindering spirits, torma offerings and so forth.

Though we may perform the middling sadhana and the extensive Kangso in a group, it is important to realize that we are not really meant to recite certain elements of the sadhana such as the self-generation as the Yidam, blessing offerings, mantra recitation, and torma offerings...it is the same if we were to sit in on self-initiation before completing a qualified close retreat. These things are not simply traditions set up out of some power trip or to be exclusionist, they are explained in the Tantras themselves for reasons, and if we do not respect this, well, how on earth do we expect to make progress without respecting the words of Buddha and observing the vows and commitments even if we haven't formally received them yet?

You may think its no big deal, but we are talking about karma and some very subtle things happening in the mind that we shouldn't be naive or dismissive about. There are systems put in place for very important reasons which essentially guide us directly to the attainments, so best to humble ourselves before the Holy Beings and follow their advice. Just sayin'.

oh, thanks for the history of Ganglongma. that is a very interesting fact indeed about that prayer which I have memorized and I do daily. I had no idea that it came from Nalanda. High Lamas definitely can travel with their astral bodies to the purelands and receive teachings so that they can transmit those teachings to us. An example is how Zong Rinpoche went to the realm of the devas to retrive a melody's text that was used in a ritual that was lost when China invaded Tibet and when he could sing it out perfectly and the older monks who listened to it before said it was the exact one.

Thank you Beggar for sharing the Dorje Shugden prayer with all the links.

I also found the prayer composed by the current incarnation of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. (http://www.dorjeshugden.com/prayers/dorje-shugden-prayers/a-prayer-by-the-current-incarnation-of-tulku-drakpa-gyeltsen/)

I also found a Trakze prayer with teaching & prayer text: “Trakze Practice for Protection Against Spirits or Black Magic” (http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/features/powerful-protection-against-spirits-or-black-magic/). Trakze is the wrathful form of Dorje Shugden and most effective in handling black magic cases and purifying very negative karma.
