Master Cheng Yen has always had a unique way of raising funds and helping the needy. Throughout her life, she has never been daunted by lack of experience, people or money. Because of this, Tzu Chi has a long list of successful relief projects. When Master Cheng Yen announced her decision to build the Hualien Tzu Chi General hospital in the 1980s, there was a lot of opposition. But she was determined to do it because the eastern coast of Taiwan needed a hospital. The news was published in the newspapers and there was a Japanese man who wanted to donate US$200 million. The Master declined the offer giving three reasons: (1)  Taiwanese citizens should be able to build the hospital with their own resources; (2) major investors might expect to have a final say in policy-making with respect to business operations and concentrating operational control in the hands of a few people ran counter to the Master's original ideal; and (3) the Master intended to set up the hospital through the united effort and love of many people, so that it would be a hospital for everyone. "Merits are to be cultivated by all." she proclaimed. "The seeds of blessings are to be planted by all."

The Master's clarity and strength of vision motivated Tzu Chi members to work even harder to raise funds.

The 80/20 lifestyle is based on Buddhist principles such as generosity and the wish to relieve others of their suffering. Even non-Buddhists can practice this. Although the Hualien Tzu Chi General Hospital is a Buddhist hospital its staff and doctors include Christians and atheists. Their main purpose is to relieve people from suffering.

Sometimes, Master Cheng Yen wants to give up but an inner voice says to her, " No one is forcing you to do all this! Think back to the moment when you decided to follow this path." Then the Master remembers the pool of blood on the hospital floor and her resolve is strenghtened. In other words, we must always bear in mind the moment of enthusiasm that is the driving force that motivates us.

What a great idea of 80/20 lifestyle.
Saving 20% to help others. One can be healthy and help others at the same time. Everyone is able to contribute and we are always reminded to be aware of people that are less fortunate. Tzu Chi is a truly am inspiring organization for people. Whatever they did is to benefits others and created a great and globalize platform for others to give back to the society.
For us that wanting to contribute often thinks of where and how. Tzu Chi is one of the biggest organizations globally available for the cause. May there be more such a beneficial organization  to  benefit more people spiritually.
