The 14th Dalai Lama is destroying the work of the 5th
« on: May 28, 2008, 04:41:56 PM »
The Dalai Lama claims he is following the 5th Dalai Lama in banning the practice of Dorje Shugden. In fact he is totally the opposite. The 5th Dalai Lama first thought that Dorje Shugden was an evil spirit and tried to stop the practice but later, in his old age, realized he was an emanation of Buddha and wrote praises to him, even making a statue of him with his own hands. The 14th Dalai Lama first relied upon Dorje Shugden as a wisdom Buddha Protector and later abandoned both him and his own teachers.

Dear Trinley Kelsang,

I am completely in awe of your wonderful work. May I suggest that you gather all the information (or at least references) you have found so far showing:
1) That the 5th Dalai Lama changed his mind towards Dorje Shugden (after the events described by the current 14th Dalai Lama)
2) That the propitiation of Dorje Shugden pre-dates Thagpu Dorjechang and Je Phabongkha (identify sources and Lamas)
3) Any non-Gelugpa Lamas who praise Dorje Shugden
4) References to non-Gelugpa's relying on Dorje Shugden

It would be great to make that available as a resource to balance the mis-information spread by followers of and the Dalai Lama himself

Thank you

Robert

I agree. Trinley Kalsang is doing very wonderful work with regards to finding information Dorje Shugden and proof that he is not a sectarian deity and also a great counter to all the misinformation that the Dalai Lama's camp has posted against Dorje Shugden. The materials that he has posted can be used by any Dorje Shugden supporter to overturn lies that are used by Dalai Lama supporters everywhere as they are all around the internet these days. Having ammo to counter those malicious lies are quite important in more ways than one because without those it would be hard to counter their dominance in Buddhist forums. Their real aim isnt Dorje Shugden but Gelugpa in general...

Yes, with all these information available for all to read and understand. With knowledge, people will be able to clear their doubts that they have and start believing by using what they know, instead of what is being told to them coupled together with superstitions.

Hi all,
The 14th Dalai Lama could do well to retract his dislike of Shugden; the 5th Dalai Lama did that toward the end of his life, so maybe the Dalai Lama will follow suit?  I hope that is all he resembles the 5th Dalai Lama on, as I am sure all the Kagyu abbots would appreciate not being decapitated this particular life....

As far as other sects liking Shugden, I am quite interested in this, because I have both Kagyu and Shugden tendencies myself.  From this  site, I found the following:

 http://www.dorjeshugden.com/great-masters/recent-masters/autobiography-of-his-eminence-choyang-duldzin-kuten-lama/

which mentions that there were a lot of Kagyus and Gelugpas in Phagri, which had other traditions as well; Dorje Shugden was the general dharma protector there.

the act of endorsing Tai Situ's Karmapa candidate was more than enough to re-spark the whole issue again as many Kagyus are now very unhappy about that and are insecure. They feel that the Dalai Lama is trying to usurp and control the lineage. And that was what the Dalai Lama mentioned he would do actually that he wanted to consolidate all the lineages into one. So in more ways than one, I can see that their fears are founded. They did say that the 14th Dalai Lama is the same mindstream as the 5th and 13th one, the 5th said Shugden is enlightened, while the 13th one trusted Shugden till the end.

As far as other sects liking Shugden, I am quite interested in this, because I have both Kagyu and Shugden tendencies myself.  From this  site, I found the following:

Dear Blueuapli,

The great King Dorje Shugden has in fact been prominent in more than just the Gulug lineage and has appeared in various instances in the Nyingma, Kagyu (Drukpa Kagyu) and Sakya lineages.

First, it is well known that the Nyingmas can trace the origins of their lineage to the great Indian Master, Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) and one very visible evidence that the Nyingmas did propitiate Dorje Shugden can be seen in this antique thangka depicting Dorje Shugden surrounded by the Protectors and Yidams of the Nyingma lineage, with Padmasanbhava above Dorje Shugden. Note: Please watch by clicking on the dorjeshugdem.com video server link:

http://www.dorjeshugden.com/videos/miscellaneous/thangka-of-guru-rinpoche-above-dorje-shugden/

Dorje Shugden was also prominent in the Sakya tradition and in fact one of the past incarnations of Dorje Shugden was as Sakya Pandita, the head of the Sakyas.  It is also believed that initially the spirit of Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, driven by his Sakya imprints travlled to the Sakyas whereupon Dagchen Dorje Chang Sonam Rinchen, who was the head of the Sakyas at the time recognised Dorje Shugden clearly and enthroned him as a Dharma Protector.  Sakya praises of Dorje Shugden was later composed by the Sakya Master, Kunkhyen Ngawang Kungo Lodroe.

In fact in many accounts, Dorje Shugden was first worshipped by the Sakyas as a Dharma Protector and was inducted into the Sakya pantheon of protectors and together with the other Sakya deities, Dorje Setrab and Tsi’u Marpo, were known as Gyalpo Sum, or The Three Kings who were widely revered within the lineage.

In yet another account, Dorje Shugden was reincarnated directly into the line of the Sakya throneholders itself:

http://www.dorjeshugden.com/great-masters/enlightened-lamas-series/dragshul-trinley-rinchen-1871-1935-the-39th-sakya-trizin/

Regardless of variations to the history of Dorje Shugden in the Sakya lineage, there is no doubt that the protector was very prominent in the lineage in the past.

As for the Drukpa Kagyus, reference to Dorje Shugden is via the great writings by one of the very significant figures in the Drukpa Kagyu sect, Jigme Norbu who was recognized as the mind emanation of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who held the honour for being reinstating the independence of Bhutan from Tibet.

Amongst Jigme Norbu’s collection of great works published as The Collected Works of the Fourth Zhabdrung Tulku of Bhutan were writings on rituals and invocations to the Drukpa Kagyu’s pantheon of protectors including Mahakala, Tsering Chenga, Shinkongma, Rahula, Pam Busum, Tsiu Marpo, Palden Lhamo, Chatri Tsengod, Dorje Shugden, and Jagpa Melen.

More recently, the 16th Karmapa H.H. Rangjung Rigpe Dorje was well known to have advised that there will come a time when all will have to depend on Dorje Shugden.

Therefore up until recent times the other lineages other than the Gelugpas, were proven to also have propitiated Dorje Shugden. This may have changed due to political pressure from the powers that be, or due to the jealousy of the other sects of the supremacy on the Gelugs.

Hope this helps.

Dear Kelsang,

You are absolutely correct to point out that in fact the Great Fifth Dalai Lama ended writing a Praise to Dorje Shugde, built a temple for the Protector and made statues of him.

The 14th Dalai Lama has often also cited the Great Thirteenth Dalai Lama to justify his ban on the Protector. They were some accounts that state that the 13th Dalai Lama instructed Pabongka Rinpoche to cease spreading the practice, however, even the 13th Dalai Lama eventually came to rely on Dorje Shugden. Here are 2 historic accounts of the 13th Dalai Lama and his trust in Dorje Shugden:

(i) The first spoke of how the 13th Dalai Lama took the advice of Dorje Shugden to heart and successfully repelled earlier threats of Chinese incursions: http://www.dorjeshugden.com/forum/index.php?topic=3447.0

(ii) The second is an account by Tibetologist Geaorge Chryssides on how the 13th Dalai Lama eventually propitiated the Protector himself. This was stated in the book "Exploring New Religions":

Thank you vajratruth for sharing such wonderful information with us.

I have also heard that it is not only the Gelugs that practice DS, many of the other lineages practive DS as well. And in their practices, DS is the main protector that they pray to.

Below would be an article that I stumbled upon in relation to what is discussed.

Quote
The Dharma Protector

Kadampa practitioners traditionally make offerings and requests to the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden.

The purpose of this practice is to remove obstacles and gather all favorable conditions for their spiritual practice.

Kadampa Buddhist Centers worldwide practice three Protector sadhanas:
Heart Jewel, Wishfulfilling Jewel, and Melodious Drum.

About the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden

A Dharma Protector is an emanation of a Buddha or a Bodhisattva whose main functions are to avert the inner and outer obstacles that prevent practitioners from gaining spiritual realizations, and to arrange all the necessary conditions for their practice.

In Tibet, every monastery had its own Dharma Protector, but the tradition did not begin in Tibet; the Mahayanists of ancient India also relied upon Dharma Protectors to eliminate hindrances and to fulfil their spiritual wishes.

Though there are some worldly deities who are friendly towards Buddhism and who try to help practitioners, they are not real Dharma Protectors. Such worldly deities are able to increase the external wealth of practitioners and help them to succeed in their worldly activities, but they do not have the wisdom or the power to protect the development of Dharma within a practitioner’s mind.

It is this inner Dharma – the experiences of great compassion, bodhichitta, the wisdom realizing emptiness, and so forth – that is most important and that needs to be protected; outer conditions are of secondary importance.
Although their motivation is good, worldly deities lack wisdom and so sometimes the external help that they give actually interferes with the attainment of authentic Dharma realizations. If they have no Dharma realizations themselves, how can they be Dharma Protectors?

It is clear therefore that all actual Dharma Protectors must be emanations of Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. These Protectors have great power to protect Buddhadharma and its practitioners, but the extent to which we receive help from them depends upon our faith and conviction in them. To receive their full protection, we must rely upon them with continuous, unwavering devotion.

Buddhas have manifested in the form of various Dharma Protectors, such as Mahakala, Kalarupa, Kalindewi, and Dorje Shugden. From the time of Je Tsongkhapa until the first Panchen Lama, Losang Chökyi Gyaltsän, the principal Dharma Protector of Je Tsongkhapa’s lineage was Kalarupa. Later, however, it was felt by many high Lamas that Dorje Shugden had become the principal Dharma Protector of this tradition.

There is no difference in the compassion, wisdom, or power of the various Dharma Protectors, but because of the karma of sentient beings, one particular Dharma Protector will have a greater opportunity to help Dharma practitioners at any one particular time.

We can understand how this is so by considering the example of Buddha Shakyamuni. Previously the beings of this world had the karma to see Buddha Shakyamuni’s Supreme Emanation Body and to receive teachings directly from him.

These days, however, we do not have such karma, and so Buddha appears to us in the form of our Spiritual Guide and helps us by giving teachings and leading us on spiritual paths. Thus, the form that Buddha’s help takes varies according to our changing karma, but its essential nature remains the same.

Among all the Dharma Protectors, four-faced Mahakala, Kalarupa, and Dorje Shugden in particular have the same nature because they are all emanations of Manjushri.

However, the beings of this present time have a stronger karmic link with Dorje Shugden than with the other Dharma Protectors. It was for this reason that Morchen Dorjechang Kunga Lhundrup, a very highly realized Master of the Sakya tradition, told his disciples, “Now is the time to rely upon Dorje Shugden.” He said this on many occasions to encourage his disciples to develop faith in the practice of Dorje Shugden.

We too should heed his advice and take it to heart. He did not say that this is the time to rely upon other Dharma Protectors, but clearly stated that now is the time to rely upon Dorje Shugden. Many high Lamas of the Sakya tradition and many Sakya monasteries have relied sincerely upon Dorje Shugden.

In recent years the person most responsible for propagating the practice of Dorje Shugden was the late Trijang Dorjechang, the root Guru of many Gelugpa practitioners from humble novices to the highest Lamas. He encouraged all his disciples to rely upon Dorje Shugden and gave Dorje Shugdän empowerments many times.

Even in his old age, so as to prevent the practice of Dorje Shugdän from degenerating he wrote an extensive text entitled Symphony Delighting an Ocean of Conquerors, which is a commentary to Tagpo Kelsang Khädrub Rinpoche’s praise of Dorje Shugden called Infinite Aeons.

The Nature and Function of the Dharma Protector

Some people believe that Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri who shows the aspect of a worldly being, but this is incorrect. Even Dorje Shugden’s form reveals the complete stages of the path of Sutra and Tantra, and such qualities are not possessed by the forms of worldly beings.

Dorje Shugden appears as a fully ordained monk to show that the practice of pure moral discipline is essential for those who wish to attain enlightenment. In his left hand he holds a heart, which symbolizes great compassion and spontaneous great bliss – the essence of all the stages of the vast path of Sutra and Tantra.

His round yellow hat represents the view of Nagarjuna, and the wisdom sword in his right hand teaches us to sever ignorance, the root of samsara, with the sharp blade of Nagarjuna’s view. This is the essence of all the stages of the profound path of Sutra and Tantra.

Dorje Shugden rides a snow lion, the symbol of the four fearlessnesses of a Buddha, and has a jewel-spitting mongoose perched on his left arm, symbolizing his power to bestow wealth on those who put their trust in him. The single eye in the center of his forehead symbolizes his omniscient wisdom, which perceives directly and simultaneously all past, present, and future phenomena.

His wrathful expression indicates that he destroys ignorance, the real enemy of all living beings, by blessing them with great wisdom; and also that he destroys the obstacles of pure Dharma practitioners.

The Benefits of Relying Upon Dorje Shugden

If we can understand well the nature and functions of Dorje Shugden, we can understand the benefits of relying upon him. Dorje Shugden always helps, guides, and protects pure and faithful practitioners by granting blessings, increasing their wisdom, fulfilling their wishes, and bestowing success on all their virtuous activities.

Dorje Shugden does not help only Kadampas; because he is a Buddha he helps all living beings, including non-Buddhists. The sun benefits even those born blind, giving them warmth and ripening the crops that become their food; but should they gain their sight, how much more obvious its benefit would be!

In a similar way, although Dorje Shugden protects even those who do not make an effort to rely upon him, when our eyes of faith in him open and we rely upon him sincerely we will gradually become more aware of the help we receive from him.

If we sincerely wish to experience the benefits of relying upon Dorje Shugden, we must rely upon him constantly over a long period of time, steadily improving our connection with him. In this way, we will begin to notice his beneficial influence in our lives.

We should understand that the principal function of a Dharma Protector is to protect our Dharma practice, not to help our mundane affairs. Bearing this in mind we should not become discouraged if we do not suddenly become very wealthy, for wealth does not necessarily help spiritual practice and can be a great distraction.

If we rely sincerely upon Dorje Shugden, he will arrange the conditions that are most conducive for our Dharma practice but these will not necessarily be the ones that we ourself would have chosen! Dorje Shugden will bless our minds to help us transform difficult situations into the spiritual path, and he will open the wisdom eyes of his faithful followers, enabling them always to make the right decisions.

But it is sad that i find that the Sakyas have whitewashed their history and sort of erased Dorje Shugden from their annals. This is sad as Sakya Trinzin himself has downplayed the role of Dorje Shugden in their lineage when his own father was regarded as an emanation of Dorje Shugden. The current Sakya Trinzin is the reincarnation of Apong Terton Rinpoche, according to history, who agreed to be reborn as the son of the previous Sakya Trinzin when he could not have children. The Nyingmas are somewhat divided to an extent on this issue as many lineages choose to hate Dorje Shugden, while some remain impartial to them.

The mind of the great 5th and the 14th are no different, it is a continuum I believe. The ban created by the 14th Dalai Lama has made Dorje Shugden one of the most 'famous' deities and well known all over the world. In fact the Great 5th on,y managed to spread DS to the countries traditionally associated with Tibet.

Now the 14th Dalai Lama has spread Dorje Shugden to all over the world. Who has more impact the 14th Dalai Lama of course.

This is puzzling indeed...
Why did the Sakyas chose to withdraw from the debate about Dorje Shugden.
Is it to give more space to the Dalai Lama to do His work?
Is it to avoid an un-necessary divide?
Is it to keep the Sakya devotees removed from the debate?
Is it so as to leave an avenue for the Masters of the Gelug school on this matter?
Is it so as not to confuse the Buddhist practitioners (mm.... that is confusing even more to me...)?
Is it so that they can be more effective now and in the future on the propitiation of Buddhism (mmm... that is double puzzling)?
Is it because they made it a secret practice literally?
Is it following, perhaps, an instruction from the Great protector Dorje Shugden Himself?

It might be like what DharmaSpace said, this whole ban is to spread Dorje Shugden instead of banning the practice of him. It is like a reverse psychology thing whereby someone tells you to not do something, but you will do it more because you are "breaking the rules".

True enough that Dorje Shugden is a "hot" topic among all Buddhists, but it confuses people who are new to Buddhism as they would not know how to handle the believe. Some may even go to the extreme of sending death threats and killing Shugden practitioners.

Well thought out. You see if the 5th and the 14th Dalai Lama are of the same mind, that simply means HHDL is just creating a facade and illusory play so that Dorje Shugden practice can spread further!

I am certain HHDL is clairvoyant and would see all this through otherwise why call him Chenrezig? Yes perhaps the 14th will say the opposite like the 5th when the time is right. Maybe after HHDL visit in China?

Even as recent as last year, Sakya Trinzin has instructed the Sakya Temple of Munchung to throw away the 350 year old statue of Dorje Shugden into the river and to immediately close His chapel and to stop all prayers done to him. Whether or not his instructions were carried out was unclear as there were no more reports on it after that, and also there was no reason given for the removal of the statue and the banning of the practice. Maybe perhaps he is doing so to support the Dalai Lama as the Sakya Trinzin is very close to the Dalai Lama and CTA, traditionally.
