An Exclusive Interview with Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang Chojin of Sampheling

It's an interview with the abbot of Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang Chojin of Sampheling Monastery in Tibet, where the Dalai Lama's influence cannot particularly reach. It is a very good read on the whole Dorje Shugden issue and how we should handle it!

Kensur Rinpoche spoke of the Chatreng people’s unwavering devotion towards their Guru Trijang Rinpoche and also their Protector, Dorje Shugden, in the face of attacks against the practice. To Kensur Rinpoche, it is allegiance and devotion to the Guru, and the practice that the Guru has given that matters, not the rumors and propaganda – no matter who the source. On this Kensur Rinpoche has no doubts. Kensur Rinpoche’s reason is simple – the lineage of Dorje Shugden is the same pure lineage that indisputable masters such as H.H. Pabongka Rinpoche and H.H. Trijang Rinpoche have transmitted to us. It is this lineage that practitioners of Dorje Shugden belong to, and that which Kensur Rinpoche said we must all continue and preserve.

Fundamentally, Kensur Rinpoche’s advice is to closely follow the guidance of our respective Gurus who are highly qualified to transmit the pure teachings to us. To follow the Guru and the Protector is to practice Dharma. This has always been the tradition and should not change because of any gossip or rumors. Kensur Rinpoche also mentioned that he finds the Dalai Lama’s reason to ban the practice to be void of logic.

It is always great to know that there are people that are very devoted to their Gurus, although they may not have the chance to be close to their lamas, but they still continue with the practices that are being taught by their Guru, Trijang Rinpoche.

To the people in Chatreng, it does not matter there is a ban going on or not, instead they choose to follow what their Guru is doing and supports him all the way. Not causing any problems for him so that their Guru will not be able to do great things like what he can do and have the potential of doing it.

I believe in these degenerated times, Guru devotion is very important in the society now. Being able to just work, follow the advises given, and also help to spread dharma further.

I believe strict Guru devotion is important at any time but especially so when the Dharma is under attack as it seems to be. The reason is simple - the [root] Guru is the culmination of all Buddhas - he is indistinguishable from Vajradhara and if there is no complete devotion to the embodiment of all Buddhas then what is the point of practicing and how can one expect to gain any attainments? So either you take refuge in the embodiment of all Buddhas and have complete faith in him or you take refuge in rumours and lies.

When we see clearly the Guru and Protector as the supreme Three Jewels, then it is our good karma and merits working for us allowing us to see through lies designed to stumble our practice, and in that process even more merits are being created. So Guru devotion is pivotal. By the same token, when we do not have total Guru devotion and when we doubt our Guru, a huge amount of negative karma is generated and that bad karma serves to detract our practice by a range of ways including making us have wrong views such as seeing a Buddha as a demon instead.

The people of Chatreng demonstrates tremendous Guru devotion. And the way they behave and go about their practice is as if Trijang Rinpoche is still alive and watching them. The ban has, in a way, forced people to decide whether or not to follow their Gurus or to follow a political ban disguised as a spiritual edict. I find the different reactions of the different people out there to the ban interesting as it shows who they really are and how stable their mind is. There are some who hold on to their Guru's tradition, some who dump the Guru, some who usurp the Guru's center and kick out his older students who did the practice, some write biased historical facts that are anything but accurate and so on. It teaches an interesting lesson for all to learn.
