June 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Dr. Rajitha Senaratne slammed the Buddhist extremist organization Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) yesterday claiming that the monk led extremist group is trying to become the armed wing of Buddhism.
Highlighting that Buddhism is against the racism, the Minister said the BBS moves were against the Buddhism and Lord Buddha was lucky not to be alive to see their evil acts.
In reply to the BBS secretary Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero's challenge to end the politics of Minister Senaratne, the Minister pointed out that he could not be ousted from politics even by means of T-56 automatic rifles during the insurrection of the Marxist People's Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
The Minister expressed these views addressing a meeting held in Kudawella in Matara district.
The extremist Buddhist group's hardline attitude and intolerance towards other religions have drawn concern from moderate Sri Lankans who fear that a Taliban like group is in the formation if the government and the society fail to take action against the group.
The group is linked to several attacks on Muslim establishments in the country and Christian evangelical centers. The BBS successfully campaigned against the Halal certification of foods in the country.
