UPDATE: Abbots Urgently Sent to the USA
« on: November 02, 2013, 09:30:10 PM »
The latest update shows that the abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery has met with H.H. Trijang Rinpoche in the USA. The abbot travelled  to Vermont where Trijang Rinpoche’s centre is located (http://www.tbiusa.org) especially to have audience. H.H. the Dalai Lama instructed the abbot to make a trip to the USA to seek audience with Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche’s current incarnation, the aim is to request Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche to return to Gaden for a visit. Initially Trijang Rinpoche declined the visit of the abbot, but in his compassion he allowed the audience.

Below is the summary of the meeting:

1. The Gaden Shartse Monastery’s abbot requested Trijang Rinpoche to return to Gaden Monastery to give teachings, transmissions and talks. Trijang Rinpoche countered by saying that by the command of H.H. the Dalai Lama and CTA, all those who practice Dorje Shugden may not have association with those who do not, so this is not logical nor practical. All those who do not practice Dorje Shugden may not have any affiliations to Tibetans who continue their practice. In fact H.H. the Dalai Lama has ordered on many occasions that all those who practice Dorje Shugden may not participate in his ceremonies, teachings and gatherings. H.H. the Dalai lama strictly forbade Shugden followers to be involved. In light of this why is H.H. the Dalai Lama requesting Trijang Rinpoche to participate?

Gaden Shartse abbot Jangchup Choeden
2. The abbot himself requested Trijang Rinpoche not to remove Gaden Monastery from his heart. Trijang replied that he has not but it is in fact Gaden Monastery that has ‘forgotten’ about him. Gaden Monastery has vehemently expelled all Dorje Shugden practitioners. Therefore over 700 monks left Gaden Shartse to form Shar Gaden Monastery (http://shargadenpa.org). Trijang Rinpoche’s household (Ladrang) in Gaden has officially left Gaden Shartse to join with Shar Gaden Monastery.

3. Trijang Rinpoche told the abbot to send the message back to Kukey Yigtsang (the Private Office of H.H. the Dalai Lama) , that what Tibetans need now is unity and not separation. This Dorje Shugden ban is creating separation which is very bad on many levels. It separates the Tibetans within Tibet and outside of Tibet into two camps. This weakens the Tibetan culture, language, religion and traditions severely. Family members have been separated due to their different convictions in regards to Dorje Shugden.  Trijang Rinpoche told the abbot to make sure he sends these points back to Kukey Yigtsang accurately, or Trijang Rinpoche himself will send an email. Trijang Rinpoche was very direct to send the message back to H.H. the Dalai Lama and CTA in Dharamsala.

4. One curious point is when the abbot presented the request letter to Trijang Rinpoche to return to teach, it was written on Gaden’s letterhead and not Kukey Yigtsang’s. If H.H. the Dalai Lama is asking Trijang Rinpoche to return, then why was the request letter not written on Kukey Yigtsang’s letterhead? Requests should have been by tradition written on both letterheads. Speculation into this might conclude in case Trijang Rinpoche declines, it would save Kukey Yigtsang embarrassment.

His Holiness Yongyal Rinpoche
5. H.H. the Dalai Lama asked Trijang Rinpoche to attend the upcoming teachings at Sera Mey . H.H. the Dalai Lama is giving teachings in Sera Monastery and requests Trijang Rinpoche to attend. H.H. the Dalai Lama  would like to give all the teachings that he has received from Trijang Rinpoche’s predecessor back to him, but Trijang Rinpoche can get all these teachings from H.H. Yongyal Rinpoche, his current teacher in California. The complete lineage is held by Yongyal Rinpoche and it is not necessary to receive from H.H. the Dalai Lama.

6. Trijang Rinpoche told the abbot: H.H. the Dalai Lama says he has to ban Dorje Shugden because the 5th Dalai Lama banned Dorje Shugden, so he is following in the footsteps of his own predecessor. H.H. the Dalai Lama is continuing the works of his predecessors as this is only ‘right’ since he is the incarnation of his predecessor. This is the logic H.H. the Dalai Lama gave. Then Trijang Rinpoche refuted this and said, then Trijang Rinpoche himself must follow in the tradition of his own predecessors by continuing his practice of Dorje Shugden, which is a very logical point. How come only H.H. the Dalai Lama can continues with his predecessor’s ‘legacy’ and no other Tulku or reincarnated lama may do so? Very powerful and valid point. There are more Tulkus who have practiced Dorje Shugden in their previous incarnations, so why are they not allowed to continue in this incarnation without persecution? Why is one man’s decision (Dalai Lama) allowed to override all others? Where is the religious freedom? H.H. the Dalai Lama’s policies do not allow for other lamas who wish to continue their predecessors legacies to do so in freedom. In fact there are hundreds of Monasteries, regions in Tibet, families that have practiced Dorje Shugden for centuries that are persecuted. This is their freedom to continue their legacy. Why is this not allowed is what Trijang Rinpoche questioned. This is what millions of Dorje Shugden practitioners have been questioning since the ban started.

At this moment, everything about the Dorje Shugden ban is status quo from the CTA, which is that anyone who practices Dorje Shugden is not allowed to come near or has any sort of interaction/association with H.H. the Dalai Lama, but this invitation to Trijang Rinpoche as mentioned above contradicts it. All Tibetans who practice Dorje Shugden must be separate from Tibetans who do not. The rights and privileges of Tibetans who continue their practice of Dorje Shugden are not allowed by the CTA so far as of November 2013. They are to be ostracized from all Tibetan schools, hospitals, town meetings, decisions, Tibetan parliamentary gatherings, H.H. the Dalai Lama’s teachings and so on. This is total and complete religious persecution. Either you abandon Dorje Shugden or you do not have the rights and privileges of any other Tibetan.

H.H. the Dalai Lama’s administration must be suffering a lot of negative repercussions, pressure and loss of face from many of the Tibetans including Trijang Rinpoche not being involved with H.H. the Dalai Lama due to the Dorje Shugden ban, so this pressure must have forced the administration to go and invite Trijang Rinpoche back to Gaden Monastery. It is sheer desperation H.H. the Dalai Lama has resorted to sending the Abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery to seek audience with Trijang Rinpoche to request him back after he was forcibly expelled.

Trijang Rinpoche due to his practice of Dorje Shugden had to flee Gaden Monastery as there was many death threats to his life in which Gaden did not act to protect.  Trijang Rinpoche has been away from Gaden for nearly 15 years solely because he chooses to practice Dorje Shugden. Trijang Rinpoche’s household and students were banned from Gaden due to the fact they do not wish to be forced into swearing in against the practice of Dorje Shugden.

Now the abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery has to return and report to H.H. the Dalai Lama the unsuccessful attempt to invite Trijang Rinpoche to return. This shows how committed Trijang Rinpoche is towards his practice, religious freedom and the general welfare of dharma practitioners. He feels everyone should have the complete freedom to practice what they like and he holds this stance strongly sending the same message to H.H. the Dalai Lama.

An interesting side note is the current abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery (Geshe Jangchup Choeden) who was handpicked by H.H. the Dalai Lama to be the abbot is not popular at all within the ranks of the Gaden monks. They are quietly calling for his resignation as he has neglected many duties of an abbot. They are hoping he resigns soon as well the ban.

H.H. Trijang Rinpoche retorted to H.H. The Dalai Lama's instruction to return to Gaden through the Gaden Shartse abbot Jangchup Choeden - an eye for an eye.  It is profoundly moving to note that H.H. Trijang Rinpoche has not swayed a micro bit but remained steadfast and loyal to the lineage and followers throughout this difficult period under the prosecution including life threats to his life.

When H.H. the Dalai Lama came a knocking on his door seeking his return to Gaden, it is time not too distant, for H.H. Trijang Rinpoche to flex his muscle and wings to demonstrate his ability and powers to the whole world as a Dorje Shugden lineage holder.  No ban can ever deter nor stop H.H. Trijang Rinpoche but fizzles off in no time.

Thank you icy for sharing these interesting events between HH Trijang Rinpoche and HH The Dalai Lama. I believe that knowing this would clear many doubts for new practitioners. HH Trijang Rinpoche made a very valid point as followings:

"How come only H.H. the Dalai Lama can continue with his predecessor’s ‘legacy’ and no other Tulku or reincarnated lama may do so?"

On a separate note, I'm wondering why HHDL is so adamant for HH Trijang to return to Gaden Monastery and Sera Mey Monastery? Why would HHDL want to reconnect with HH Trijang Rinpoche when HH knows that HH Trijang Rinpoche is a strong advocate of Dorje Shugden's practice? Wouldn't HHDL openly contradict himself?

It's very interesting how everything is unfolding itself. I feel that HHDL is so compassionate that HH would discredit himself for the sake of promoting Dorje Shugden in an unconventional manner. With due respect to HHDL, after HHDL is gone, the next "face" of Tibetan Buddhism will be HH Trijang Rinpoche. So perhaps, HHDL is now preparing for HH Trijang Rinpoche to take on this role.

First of all, why did the Dalai Lama want to invite Trijang Rinpoche back to Gaden to teach? Is it because Trijang Rinpoche has been making news since turning 30 and is a threat to the Dalai Lama and the Dorje Shugden movement is getting stronger and stronger. Inviting Trijang Rinpoche back to Gaden to teach is going against his own words as he disallows DS practitioners/monks to with him. For monks who receives teachings from Trijang Rinpoche, wouldn't they be breaking samaya with the Dalai Lama?

All of Trijang Rinpoche's points in rejecting the invitation has valid reasons and the Abbot does not have any reasons to rebut those reasons. There must be an ulterior motive for that invitation back to Gaden. Maybe, it is to show that a reconciliation is on its way. If it is true, then it is good news. I guess the Dalai Lama would have to be more persistent since so many people has suffered since the ban was imposed.

I would not be the only one sensing that the tide is changing, and strongly as well. For decades, Dorje Shugden lamas and practitioners have had to endure the assault by the CTA and Dalai Lama’s Office against a deity and religious practice which they have lived and sworn by, which translated into all-out hostilities against their livelihood and freedom. Even Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche was not spared. While Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche's compassion may not allow him to hold grudges, neither would his wisdom allow him to forget how the CTA tried to eradicate a Protector who has helped the Tbetans through many difficult times.

What disappoints me most about this latest news is how recalcitrant the CTA, Dalai Lama’s Office and anti-Shugden lamas and monasteries still are about a mistake that should have rectified a long time ago. Instead of showing any sincerity, they are still trying to maneuver this very process of inviting Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche to return to India and manipulate the situation, for e.g. by presenting a desperate request as if it is a noble offer to pass the lineage practice to the young Trijang Rinpoche. It is also shocking that the Dalai Lama’s office would assume that Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche could be tricked or bought. I think this itself shows how little the Tibetan leadership think of their own Tibetan people. At the same time, perhaps it also shows that the Dalai Lama’s people are not coming to grips with the fact that His Holiness’s influence is fast waning due to too many unfair practices and inconsistencies over the decades, and they still think that the name of the Dalai Lama is sufficient to summon lamas action. The ban very much damaged the Dalai Lama’s and the Tibetan authority’s credibility.

By not presenting the Dalai Lama’s request to Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche on the Dalai Lama’s Private Office letterhead as is the correct protocol, I guess the Dalai Lama and his minders already guessed that the request would be denied by Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche. And yet they went ahead and sent a senior monk to literally embarrass himself with such a ridiculous suggestion. What is it that the CTA and Dalai Lama’s office are so fearful of that they should seek to go all out to try and bribe Trijang Rinpoche to return?

All honest Tibetan people and any good ministers and politicians left in the CTA, as well as Tibetan scholars and observers must take good note of this latest move by the Tibetan leadership, and force the question to be answered by the Dalai Lama. Why this change? Why invite a significant Shugden lama to return to the land and monasteries from where they were expelled and pretend as if no injustice had occurred after an entire community of people have been torn apart and after the holy sangha has been split from within.

I very much feel that we are seeing the tail end of a religious ban and with that, the fast fading control that the Dalai Lama’s office and CTA have exacted on the Tibetan people for too long.

This is incredible news and its truly an insider's scoop on the latest news. I am proud of Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche for stepping up his ground and I just love his simple logic and reasoning. He is so practical and patient to answer each and every point of request. I am sure the Dalai Lama is not desperate and arbitrarily sending the abbot to make an empty request. He must know that Trijang Rinpoche is mature and confident enough to reject the abbot. He must be sending the abbot to reveal Kyabje Trijang Rinppche's true nature and steadfastness to the Dorje Shugden practice and lineage.

I don't think that Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche needs to flex any muscle or show anything to the Dalai Lama. They know each other very well. I just think that the Dalai Lama is sending the abbot because it is time to reveal more and more of the hidden qualities of Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche as his time has come to reach out and continue where his predecessor has left off. As each time the Dalai Lama or anybody on his behalf makes such a request, it becomes more and more apparent who Trijang Rinpoche is and his stance on maintaining his lineage of his predecessors. This will become more and more apparent with time.

Probably he just wanted to be seen as such (desperate and erratic). If so, he magnificently succeeded.

Yes, you are right Big Uncle, H.H. Trijang Rinpoche does not need to show his ability to the Dalai Lama.  These are divine plays of the Buddhas to subdue our samsaric minds.  When H.H. Trijang Rinpoche flex his muscle and wings, it means that inevitably he will take flight from a fledgeling into a mighty Shugden lineage master soaring the limitless space to benefit infinite beings like his predecessors.

H.H. Trijang Rinpoche will restore and increase faith on Dorje Shugden in the light of the bad publicity which had been created by the Dalai Lama for a bigger picture.  He the Shugden Lineage Holder will eventually manifest power to show the world who he really is by miraculous signs, one of which is the manifestation of  rinchen ribu (precious pill) from his body.  I was in awe when I heard this prediction from a high Shugden Lama in the early days when the ban on Shugden was implemented.

In Tibetan Medicine, rinchen ribu has the capacity to heal diseases.  The capacity of these special pills have therapeutic effects based on special and often unusual ingredients from complex pharmacological processing methods coupled by the spiritual power of the physician who prepares them.

Guys! Have you read what the Gaden Khenpo said in respond to this article? He made his answer known on his Facebook page! Go LOOK... https://www.facebook.com/KRjangchoe?fref=ts

It is quite hilarious for him to think he can suddenly be the one to bridge the gap between two global high Lamas!!!

Well this goes to show that there a lot of anti-DS fan lurking and watching this website! Obviously they are on the look out on the news! I guess Dorjeshugden.com admin, your website must have some weight, authority and influential if not why bother right? Good job! ;)

Also I'm sure the Shartse Abbot is also freaking out cos this news is circulating all over the cyber world through the Facebook fan page and tweets! And that leaves him with no choice but to quickly refute with some baseless reasons to cover up as the embarrassment of the a unsuccessful, wasted mission.

It must be a huge embarrassment not just for him but also for Kukey Yigtsang (the Private Office of H.H. the Dalai Lama). It seems like the Khenpo was also picked as the "scapegoat" in preparation for if such a situation arise and in case the mission is a failure.

Yeah right, like we're all going to believe after so many years of the BAN and HHDL saying even His Guru Trijang Rinpoche is "WRONG", suddenly now the HERO current Gaden Khenpo who has NO RELATIONSHIP or CLOSENESS to Trijang Rinpoche is SUDDENLY CONCERN and CARES about the gap between the two world's biggest Lamas and that He so bravely thought and took the initiative to go see Trijang Rinpoche to request Trijang Rinpoche to change his mind about Dorje Shugden practice, come back to Gaden and oh attend HHDL teachings! And yeah all this was without HHDL consent and approval!!!!
Like Wow, the world is so gonna buy and believe that?! Only people who will buy this story is those non existing govt people in CTAS and Pro-Dalai Lama supporters would applause this without much thought of course. What else is NEW?!

Question:
1. Why do you want to invite a DS practicing Lama to come to receive teachings from HHDL or even attend when you've put a blanket ban on all DS practitioners?

2. This goes back to DS practitioners' questions from before... "How come Trijang Rinpoche is ok to practice Dorje Shugden and we're not??? This part He and the CTA has never answered and always avoided.

3. How on earth did he think he could bridge the gap between two global high Lamas? To do so, does He not need HHDL approval and agreement first? What's it got to do with him? Wouldn't it be better to send someone like the Gaden Tripa which would be better because of the caliber and rank of these Lamas?

4. What has this Khenpo done for Gaden/Tibetan Buddhism as a whole to give him the right and proper authority to suddenly be the one chosen to request Trijang Rinpoche to return to Gaden? So far from results shows clearly he has done nothing for Gaden. Just look at Gaden's website and compare with his own website. Major self-promoter, major difference!

5. If the Khenpo thinks he can bridge the gap, then wouldn't he still need to run through this idea to HHDL? We all know you cannot just do this type of visits to a DS Lama without probably being investigated and questioned silly by the CTA/His Holiness's office if it is not something they are approving of! So his reasons has many loop holes that tells us he is just full of baloney!

6. If it doesn't matter if Trijang Rinpoche came to the teachings or not, then why request in the first place? And wouldn't this request also has to be approved or known by HHDL. So there again shows it cannot be just from His own initiative. IF Trijang Rinpoche did agree to come, there would be huge preparations, obviously the whole world would know!

7. We should ask him, since this is His initiative, wonder who is coughing up the expenses of this sacred mission? Is it Gaden? Isn't Gaden in a bad financial state, what's he doing to help his own monastery? Why is He simply spending the sangha fund on a mission not even requested by His Holiness cos He claims it has nothing to do with His Holiness and that it was his own initiative.

This Khenpo's respond was really not well thought out. I wonder who is the PR person advising him, otherwise it just shows he's not very "smart". I wonder if he's just started opening up a bigger can of worms.  :o

dsiluvu, i think the big problem is that he did not have any PR person to advise him. I mean this half-baked statement is really something he came up with all by himself, i do believe, while i am highly skeptical regarding the visit to HH Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche being of his own volition. This statement is really shooting himself in the foot and will create more unhappiness and perhaps even inspire action by disgruntled parties. Perhaps the khenpo is merely an unwitting pawn in this whole Shugden saga as the ban draws to an end...

It is an interesting update indeed. I chanced by Shartse Khenpo’s reply on his facebook wall and what Khenpo wrote is totally contradicting himself and I find it disturbing to a point of being disrespectful. He wrote: “if Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche attends these upcoming teachings in Sera or not won’t make any difference at all. Most important issue for me and my colleagues are to restore relationship between two holy man.” My question to the abbot, if I may be so bold to ask is, If Trijang Rinpoche’s presence is not important as you say, why would you make a trip to TBI and why would you want to reunite both HHDL and Trijang Rinpoche together? Unless there’s another agenda….

What I find it most ridiculous is, why spend so much time, effort and resources on just going to the states and present these falsehood? Where does it get the abbot into? I don't think that there's any limelight whatsoever. And whoever's above trying to put pressure onto the abbot is directly and indirectly putting all the high Lamas, ladrangs, geshes and monks down by doing so. Gaden's pristine image has lost its glory because it has entered the shadows of politics.

Guess what guys... it's actually on the CTA's official website... http://tibet.net/2013/11/11/abbot-of-gaden-shartses-clarification/

Abbot of Gaden Shartse’s Clarification
November 11, 2013 3:15 pm
DHARAMSHALA: The abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery has issued the following clarification in response to the baseless and misleading reports titled “Abbots Urgently Sent to the USA” and “UPDATE: Abbots Urgently Sent to the USA”, published on September 26 and November 2, 2013, respectively.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like the CTA really needed to cover up their face... I'm sure it must be embarrassing to waste so much moeny and time sending these two Khenpo and return with zero results! What do they expect really?! Are they really "not" that smart? What do they take H.H. Trijang Rinpoche for??? Perhaps, they are sensing that they are obviously losing their grip even amongst their own Tibetans and hopefully they could gather more followers if H.H. Trijang Rinpoche decides to switch camps. But then again I ask... what do they think H.H. Trijang Rinpoche is? An ordinary person? A puppet they can just swing their way around? What a waste of time and resources, the money could have been put to good use like support the welfare of their people???

Yes very true, if the precedes of Trijang Rinpoche is not going to make a difference, then why go all the way to Vermont and invite Rinpoche? It is very obvious there is a different agenda in that trip. The presence of Trijang Rinpoche is very significant, I opine that it will show the world that Trijang Rinpoche still supports the Dalai Lama and that would make a huge difference in the Tibetan cause the CTA is fighting for. Trijang RInpoche has lots of followers and supporters. With him being at the Dalai Lama's teachings, it may cause more people to come back to support the Dalai Lama. However, the best way to gain back support is to lift the ban. Total no brainer!!

I completely agree with Jagger.  Shartse Kenpo contradicts himself all the way with his ridiculous answers.  He thinks we are gullible to his stories.  Without doubt Gaden Monastery has lost its glory days.  Now the shift of wind is to Shar Gaden where we can find all the top notch monks, geshes and lamas.  They are truly practising strong guru devotion and commitment to the Shugden lineage.  They are most honourable and incredible lineage holders in the face of adversity.  If CTA is smart lift the ban to prevent 'brain and character' lost to Shar Gaden.

Well I dannae if you lot have been following the comments section closely, but it seems like thereve been some responses to the hypocritical comments. Of course the CTA would never publish these responses on their site, because woe be unto them if they were to acknowledge the fact dissenting views actually existed in their society

From Rachel:

Khenpo-la,

Thank you for posting this comment. It is good to know that Khenpo-la is a regular reader of dorjeshugden.com… this post is so new and yet there is already a comprehensive response from you! If this website did not have credibility, or the ability to change people’s opinions, my guess is that Khenpo-la would not bother to respond.

Please allow me to share my thoughts on your comment.

1. I find it interesting that Khenpo-la mentions Trijang Rinpoche did not say yes or no to your request about changing his stance on Dorje Shugden. Why would Khenpo-la ask Trijang Rinpoche a question like that if Trijang Rinpoche is not practising? Why is the Dalai Lama’s teacher still practising? And since Trijang Rinpoche is practising, why visit a Shugden lama if they are negative and evil? I thought His Holiness’ advice was for all non-Shugden lamas to stay away from those who practise Shugden.

2. I mean no disrespect but if the Dalai Lama cannot persuade his own teacher to give up Shugden, why does Khenpo-la think he can change Trijang Rinpoche’s mind? Especially if Khenpo-la did not receive instructions from Kuger Yigtsang to make this trip?

3. Why did Khenpo-la feel it is necessary to use monastic resources to visit Trijang Rinpoche, although the Dalai Lama has told everyone to stay away from lamas who practise Shugden? It makes me wonder if perhaps Khenpo-la is courting favourable reviews from Kuger Yigtsang, by being seen to reach out to Trijang Rinpoche. I certainly do not hope this is the case.

I find the whole affair quite amusing because if Trijang Rinpoche does not want to practise Dorje Shugden anymore, he would have said so at your meeting. Then Khenpo-la would definitely report that Trijang Rinpoche has given up. Since there is no such report, therefore Trijang Rinpoche has not given up the practice which means Khenpo-la was not able to convince Trijang Rinpoche to give it up. So therefore, I am truly sorry to hear Khenpo-la did not have a successful trip to the USA. I hope Khenpo-la’s future use of monastic resources has a greater chance of coming to a successful outcome.

Kind regards.
