Lottery Money - the evil that split marriages?
« on: November 24, 2013, 05:47:43 PM »

"A couple who scooped a £101m lottery win have split up because of the enormous strain of handling their vast fortune.

Dave and Angela Dawes, originally from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, have reportedly split after two years of marriage because of rows over how to spread the EuroMillions cash between their family and friends..."

"The news of their rift comes just days after another Euromillions-winning couple, Adrian and Gillian Bayford, announced they are to divorce because of the ‘stress’ of becoming overnight multi-millionaires."

Seems... having a lot of money,  £101m in this case, couldn't bring happiness to this winning couple... Dave and Angela.

Now is money the evil or...?  ::)

How we perceive money is the culprit not money itself. Money can be both good and evil depending on individual. Different people will do different things with the same amount of money. If money is evil Bill Gate should be a demon by now. Instead he started a foundation to help people with his fortune!

This is interesting. Buddhism deemed money as neutral. Just like any thing in this world like a car, house, a chair, knife, watch, diamonds, or a tree....etc, and feeling, perception, karma and even birth/consciousness. Everything is neutral but how we get it or appears and most importantly, what we do with it,  is the key if that particular thing ot phenomena is good or bad. We can us the money to make something good by helping others; the highest of which is to support the 3 Jewels. A knife is good or bad depending on how it is used.

Interestingly, being born rich can be good or bad also, depending on the end results of what one born rich use the money, the power and the conditions associated with being born rich. I have seen rich kids destroys themselves by pursuing the enjoyments of life with the money they have and dying young as a result. That is bad karma. The money is bad karma. Without money, people still can die young. The reverse ie people who lives long, is also true.

Money is the root of all evil!!! Very true in that saying. No matter how strong a relationship is, when it comes to money matters, it can break in a second. Therefore, it is very important to have core values in each person that will ground them in times of crisis. Buddhism teaches us to be non attach to our material gains. What we have and don't have is because of our karma.

The question arise is which would you rather have:

A simple life with enough money to survive and a happy family, OR

A life where you are rich but does not have anyone with you to share your life with?

Personally to me the subject matter is not that we have a lot of money but if how we control it.
Of course anything that is excessive and without proper control will definitely bring harm in anyway. Blaming money is just an excuse for the couple to value money more important that the effort they put in to build the relationship before. If one cannot appreciate and be loyal for another partner no matter what coming into their lives will have the same result.

What Buddhism teaches us is everything is to be ok whether we have it or not. The important key is when we have it what are we doing good with it and when we don’t have it we are not disappointed or affect our life with it. Things come and go. Nothing is permanent and only karma we are able to bring with us to our next live and our future is depend on it too.

Let's imagine if we had to pay taxes on money won at the lottery.
So let's imagine that we win like 100 million dollars and we must pay 50 millions in taxes.
What would we focus on? I bet a lot of people would actually feel bitter over the 50 millions that they must part with instead of the 50 millions they just made...
What would you focus on?

Becoming a millionaire overnight is not a blessing... most of the time...

When people gets greedy, then they focus on the negative. In fact they have not lost anything at all but gain the 50 million (the example in your case). Somehow this is how samsara is and we are all stuck here.

We have the karma to gain something but how beneficial it would become all depends on our attitude and core values. For someone who is kind and generous, a windfall of money will not change them overnight (most of them).

From Galen : Money is the root of all evil!!! Very true in that saying.

Someone once told me that he enjoyed the power that money gave him, not the money  itself.

Everything has its positive and negative side. With money, if we allow it to control our life to the extent of destroying our relationship (be it a spouse, family member and/or friend), then definitely we have allowed the negative side of it to surface.

As yontenjamyang stated : We can use the money to make something good by helping others; the highest of which is to support the 3 Jewels. A knife is good or bad depending on how it is used.

Really funny. Stress from handling too much money and dont know how to divide. Let me have it and I will help you divide.  ;D

My opinion, they should have divided it fairly among the both of them so that they can choose whomever they want to give it too. At the end of the day, if you finished giving what you had, then too bad. Why are relatives and friends like that? Why is it when someone has something that they need, they become instantly close!! These are the people I would give last if I have the money. I wouldnt want to spoil them more.  :(

OR

They should have just left the country and go somewhere else to settle down. Then perhaps send some money to whom they find deserving...

The report also stated .. the failed marriage is his third and her second.

If they claim that the money was the cause of their crumbling marriage, why did they not go about giving it away. You have identified the cause; remove the cause and remove the problem.

When a couple won lottery in millions, what does it concern any of their family members at all unless they have children of their own? It is just so simple. Just split up the lottery monies among the winning couple who perhaps bought the winning ticket together, after paying tax and each do whatever they want to go about spending them.
Simple!

Why would 2 adult just split up because of winnings of a lottery ticket? It does not make sense to me.

Winning a lottery should be an American dream, but for many lottery winner the reality is like a nightmare.Sudden money can cause disaster. Many people think money can solve problems and  if they have money all their problems will be solved .Money by itself is not the problem but greed and attachment to money cause evil and destroy families and relationship. We shouldn"t let greed and money control our life, sacrificing the well being of our family and ourself...... If we were given a chance to win a lottery ticket. use it wisely to benefit others , eg. charity ...so that we don't lose the money, lose our family and lose our friends.

I disagree. Money is just an object. Inherently it has no positive or negative qualities in itself. Except for the value we place on it and the resulting problems arising from that. Just like love, fame, food, etc will cause the same problems depending on the individual who relates to each of these stimulants (attachments) in their own way.

No wonder people always say that the protector Dorje Shugden has the ability to fulfill every single one of our prayers, but he doesn't always do so. Because with his clairvoyance, he knows whether what we pray for will be beneficial for us or not, in the spiritual sense. So if you're one of those people who have unfulfilled prayers, it might be a good idea to relook at what it is we are praying for. Food for thought.
