Now Buddhism Plagued by Extremism
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:03:44 AM »
This article is published by The Tampa Tribune | TBO.com.

What has happened to Buddhism widely known as the most peace-loving religion?  The writer in this article mentioned all religious and racist chaos in the world but had missed out the bigotry truth on Dorje Shugden ban.  How degrading it would be for the Dalai Lama if the bigotry truth were to be mentioned to top it all up.  If the Shugden ban is not lifted fast enough the world will find out the truth and lose faith in the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism.

There are few differences between humans more perilous than those dictated by deeply held religious beliefs, and that’s a primary reason we see so much conflict between Christians and Muslims, between rival Islamic sects (Shiites and Sunnis), between Jews and Islamists and, especially in India and Pakistan, between Hindus and Muslims.

In the United States, we’ve been spared most of that dogmatic demonization of “the other” (although there is that small church in Kansas that dispatches demonstrators to picket the funerals of American soldiers, believing that somehow their fighting has endorsed tolerance of gays in this country and therefore needs to be protested).

The war on terror, so long an unwelcome aspect of American lives, may not have been conceived as a war against any particular religious beliefs, but invariably the war’s targets have been Islamic extremists who are taught, by their doctrinaire religious leaders, to detest the West and its values and to believe that their acts of terror will be rewarded, in heaven if not on Earth.

And so, quite naturally, for most Americans when they pay attention to religious bigotry or conflict they are likely to focus on the enmity toward our nation by extremists among the various branches of Islam or to the never-ending disputes between Israel and its Arab neighbors.

Also, there are still remnants of the intense Catholic vs. Protestant rivalries in Northern Ireland, although — with America’s help — there is relative peace in that part of the world today.

But there is also a truly nasty religious campaign being waged by Buddhists against Muslims in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Ancient grudges and indifference on the part of the government are aiding a radical Buddhist campaign to punish the nation’s Muslim minority.

If we think of Buddhism at all, we probably think of it as a peace-loving religion that embraces what its founders called “the middle way” or a lifestyle that is considered the path of moderation and the path to wisdom.

The middle way “gives vision and knowledge, and leads to calm, to insight, to enlightenment ...” as well as “right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration” according to Wikipedia.

But here’s what is happening in Myanmar: A Buddhist mob recently rampaged through a Muslim village, and a 94-year-old woman was attacked by marauding Buddhists armed with machetes and knives. Hours later, her body was found next to the smoking remains of her home. She’d been stabbed six times.

Four other Muslims were slain and more than a dozen homes destroyed in the attack on that same village last month. The New York Times reported that more than 200 people, mostly Muslims, have been killed by Buddhists in Myanmar this year.

“But the killing of a helpless elderly woman — and what followed — is one of the starkest symbols of the breadth of anti-Muslim feelings” in the Buddhist-majority country, the report added. It cited “the lack of sympathy for the victims and the failure of security forces to stop the killings.”

What makes the recent violence is so astonishing is that Myanmar’s Muslims and Buddhists had coexisted peacefully for generations. But extremist beliefs, relatively rare in Buddhist history, have fueled the recent assaults.

“The match that lit the violence … appeared to be the teachings of a radical Buddhist group, 969, that the government continues to allow to preach hatred and extend its influence throughout the countryside,” the Times reported.

It is the nature of religions that all of them naturally believe that they, and they alone, recognize the truth in important matters of faith. They can’t all be right, but that uncomfortable truth appears to elude their true believers.

In every religion there would be people that are very extreme, twisting all the information and teachings. In this case, what is happening in Myanmar is just another case of what the extremist would do.

Just like how some people fully supports the ban of Dorje Shugden and some that do not support just based on their thoughts. Not based on the understanding of the situation and having full knowledge of who is Dorje Shugden at all. They just blindly follow because the Dalai Lama has placed a ban, and they think that whatever the Dalai Lama and CTA say is definitely true, hence they must or should follow.

Perhaps we should send letters and articls to The Tampa Tribune on what's happening to Dorje Shugden practitioners and the sick discrimination that the anti-shugdenpas has been spreading?!!! Definitely it will not put His Holiness in a good light, and that would hopefully stop them from continuing their sick campaign because sponsors will pull out as people start to lose respect for His Holiness and all that He endorses.

They had better bring the ban down for their own sake and security... if they wish to continue be seen as peace makers. But I am not surprised if their lies will soon be uncovered by young budding journalist who are just dying for something juicy to report. Yes I can see clearly now that Buddha's prediction on how Buddhist will be the ones who destroy Buddhism... I guess this is how it starts. Sad and disappointing. How can conscious, compassion, Boddhisattva laws and logic be perverted to such horrible acts of discrimination is really beyond me.

The Tibetans are living off other people's country and resources yet they still have the arrogance to cause grief on to others. The ban is downright a sign of they don't care which country they are in, and the blatant disrespect for democracy and humanitarian laws. If they are allowed to do this in India and democratic nation, the can bloody well do it just about anywhere.. even in the USA! Just look here... http://www.dorjeshugden.com/forum/index.php?topic=4474.msg49366#msg49366

Sigh, it is indeed sad and ironic that Buddhism, a peace-loving religion, has not been spared the extremism of religious intolerance and hatred propagated by a racist minority group intent on promoting violence and misery, and actually backed by government and winning. And I am not just speaking of Myanmar.

It is outright irresponsible and apathetic for the Myanmar government to continue to condone such atrocities against the minority Muslim communities.  How could the government not take actions against the 969 group? It is against the basic principle of Buddhism to harm any being.

Similarly, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is not any better than the Myanmar government. Its atrocities against the Shugden followers are much worse as it has been decades since the ban on Dorje Shugden was imposed. How long more does CTA want its citizens to suffer?

Tibetans' political future is very clear. We merely have to look at how its government handle the welfare of its people, the Shugden followers. CTA's apathetic attitude shows a very  irresponsible government! The future for the Tibetans in exile are not promising at all with such leadership!

Interesting idea. Don't just stop at the Tampa Tribune though. Why not to all mainstream media to create more awareness of the hate campaign against Shugden practitioners?

It's quite odd, don't you think, why none of the world's major media, be it tv or newspapers have reported on the violence, hatred and discrimination incited by the Tibetan Administration's ban on Dorje Shugden's practice. Nor the Dalai Lama's role in formulating this "brilliant" political strategy, even encouraging the violence and hatred among his own people, to further his personal agenda.

And why not? Is it because the Dalai Lama is a Nobel Peace Prize winner who can do no wrong (despite his definitively non-peaceful ban)? Is it because the Dalai Lama is the leader of a government (albeit one that did nothing to further their country's independence movement) whom western governments are aligned with? Is it because the Dalai Lama is a public figure not to be criticized, because he is a holy man?

Or is it because what the Dalai Lama has done is too wrong, too unthinkable, too uncomfortable to talk about, too embarrassing even (given that he has been lauded with one of the highest honors the civilized world can offer) to bring to light the truth of his actions?

Come on you media people. Open your eyes already. News is news and the world has a right to know the truth of what is happening behind the closed doors of the kanshag, CTA, TGIE, etc. If journalism still means anything to you, please please please do something about the injustice of it all and report the truth of the plight of all Dorje Shugden practitioners. Don't let it be the Jews and the Holocaust all over again. Please.

Its very unfortunate that what the Buddha taught has also been corrupted and turned into a language of hate. Anyone who understands even basic Dharma knows this. Not surprisingly, not all self-professed Buddhist actually understand and practice Dharma. In the absence of real knowledge of the Buddha's teachings, well meaning albeit ignorant "practitioners" are easily manipulated by a charismatic religious leaders and spiritual demagogues. Those who are manipulated are led to believe that they are on a mission for god and a higher religious purpose.

Between certain errant Myanmar Buddhists and the Tibetan government in exile (with the support from the Dalai Lama's Office), Buddhism is getting a bad reputation. In fact there there is nothing Dharmic about Myanmar "buddhists" attacking Muslims or the Tibetans turning on Shugden practitioners within their own community.

I wonder if the Tibetans or indeed anyone reading news about how Buddhists are terrorising Muslims in Myanmar realise that the same obscenities have been taking place inside the Tibetan exile communities under the unholy and illegal Shugden ban. In any case, its too bad that the Shugden persecutions have not been getting as much press exposure as the Myanmar situation. Both are extremely damaging to the preservation and spread of the Dharma.

Extremism of any form will rear its ugly head , whether in religion or in politics. Racism is another form of extremism. Strong anti-Muslim sentiments seem to be the trend. At the heart of extremism is a hatred and resentment that has been fanned up and directed towards a certain group.

In the case of Myanmar, a very vocal and charismatic leader arose from among the monastics. It wasn't long before he was able to build up a wellspring of hate against the Muslim Rohingyas, who were made out to be usurpers of jobs and resources that were limited and fast depleting.   The hate spiraled into a vortex and the storm of hate and anger exploded on the Muslims in the most unreasonable form of callous violence.

The hatred and resentment displayed towards Dorje Shugden worshippers by the CTA and their supporters run along the same vein.Through manipulating the minds and fanning up negative emotions, a whole vortex of extreme emotions , like hate, was also built up. It also exploded in violence on the poor victims  - the Shugden worshippers, who had not given up  Shugden practice because of pure Guru Devotion.

Time for a strong wave of Buddhism founded on correct knowledge and practice to arise and overwhelm the flimsy basis of extremism.

For the sake of discussion I will classify Buddhism as a religion here. Religion are practiced by people. Any religion. No religion can claim 100% pure practitioners or followers. As such due to human factor, there will always be extremist of sort in any religion regardless of whether it is actually preached or taught by the religion itself. How many nations have gone to war and how people have died in history all in the name of God/religion.

Buddhism is not exception because like any other religion it's followers are still normal human beings. While I do admit that it would seem Buddhism is one of the more peaceful religion today that do not advocate violence and killing. My history could be wrong but as far as I know Buddhism was a widely spread religion practiced in the history of China and in those dynasty period, war and killing is not uncommon.

As long as human are human, conflict will exist. Religion is a means we seek to better understand our existence or to become a better person but religion whatever it is does not resolve any problems of the world as long as people are still people.

This hatred towards practitioners of Dorje Shugden or any other god/goddess, is a manifestation of human karma, nothing to with the religion. This case is no exception to all the war we fight in the name of good and evil, the problem is not the god/buddha/deity/protector, the problem is and has always been us.
