Pope Francis Leaving Vatican At Night To Minister To Homeless
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:30:19 AM »
While the Buddhists have their compassion in action activities to feed the homeless in the street, the Vatican has Pope Francis doing the same deed.  Pope Francis would like to bring the church to the poor on the street.  He reminds me of Mother Theresa and a high lama I know.  They are truly inspiring and lovable.

A recent interview with Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, the "Almoner of His Holiness," raised speculation that the Pope joins him on his nightly trips into Rome to give alms to the poor, and it turns out that the rumors are probably true.

A knowledgable source in Rome told The Huffington Post that "Swiss guards confirmed that the pope has ventured out at night, dressed as a regular priest, to meet with homeless men and women."

Krajewski earlier said, “When I say to him ‘I’m going out into the city this evening’, there’s the constant risk that he will come with me," and he merely smiled and ducked the question when reporters asked him point-blank whether the Pope accompanied him into the city.

He's not the only Pope known for nocturnal wanderings. There are stories of Pope John XIII sneaking out to enjoy the beauty of Rome in the evenings, and reports tell of Pope Pius XII dressing as a Franciscan during WWII to help smuggle Rome's Jewish population to safety. More recently, Pope Benedict XVI popped out unannounced to visit an art exhibit.

When Pope Francis was Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, he was known to sneak out at night to break bread with the homeless, sitting with them on the street and eating with them to show that they were loved.

And we love him for doing it now.

It is so comforting to hear of people taking to the streets to feed the homeless.  And to have the Pope going out in the dark of the night under guise as a regular priest - it is so humbling, inspiring. Imagine the danger that he exposed himself to.

While there are Soup Kitchens that serve hot foods to the homeless, there are also volunteers who bring food and necessities (at times, first aid) to these people.

is this what we call as humility? I think this is pure compassion! The Pope leading the act and promote compassion in action. Never just leave it to the followers to do themselves but getting his own hands dirty. homeless people are basically forgotten people and i didn't even notice there are actually homeless people existing in this world. Imagine the danger that the Pope will get himself into going downtown attending to the homeless people.

Pope Francis walk the talk captivates his audiences.

(CNN) -- It was the embrace that melted hearts worldwide.

Pope Francis, pausing for a moment to pray and lay his hands on a man with a disfiguring disease. The man gently burying his head in the Pope's chest, his many facial tumors visible.
His encounter with the ailing man occurred in Vatican City on Wednesday at the end of the general audience, which had about 50,000 attendees.

Images of the Pope's embrace in St. Peter's Square went viral on social media.

"I'm an atheist, but the more I hear about Pope Francis, the more I like him," Donna Hosie tweeted.

Some say Pope Francis is living up to the ideals of his namesake, Francis of Assisi, a preeminent figure who considered himself a servant to the poor and destitute.

Why the Pope's embrace is so powerful
Since taking over as the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, the Pope has highlighted the need to reach out to the poor and afflicted.

"Lord, teach us to step outside ourselves," he tweeted in August. "Teach us to go out into the streets and manifest your love."

A month later, he echoed the same sentiment.

"True charity requires courage: let us overcome the fear of getting our hands dirty so as to help those in need," he tweeted.

The Pope has called for open interaction with people from all walks of life, especially the poor, weak and vulnerable.

And he is practicing what he preaches.

The man the Pope comforted suffers from neurofibromatosis, according to the Catholic News Agency. The genetic disorder causes pain and thousands of tumors throughout the body. It leads to hearing and vision loss, heart and blood vessel complications, and severe disability from nerve compression by tumors.
The moment marked the latest in a series of memorable encounters for the Pope.

Last month, a pint-sized papal pal joined him on stage -- and refused to let go.

i like these quotes very much. And no wonder the Pope is getting more popular. He is earning the admiration of the masses with his humility and sincerity. The less pomp and ceremony surrounding the Pope, the more appealing he will be as people find him more accessible and thus catholicism too. Gone are the days when people were impressed by the ostentatious wealth of the Church. Nowadays people are more impressed by humility of leaders and their willingness to get their hands dirty.

Very nice news on the Pope... he truly is practicing compassion.

What touched me the most was that he never changed even after being the Pope, if not, he became an even better person. A man that practices what he preaches will touch everyone's hearts.

Thanks for sharing this news with us.

I think all religion teach the same message. It is only human that may use religion and highlight the differences. It is very good to see the Pope showing the way to a compassionate way of life. I always think that the Christian has always done charity in a much bigger way in history; I may be wrong but that is my perception.

Very good news from the Pope, all religion practices compassion and love, so as a Pope he should inspire and encourage more of his followers to perform this act of love. We should not label ourselves differently, if we think we can do more and give more, we should always help the less fortunate ones. Be humble.

Pope Francis is Time person of the year!!!! He is one Pope who is humble and follows what his heart tells him. He is in his normal cardinal uniform and does not have any fancy jewellery. He works for the people. There are so many changes he made since he became Pope.

Here's the person of the year 2013!

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/12/11/living/time-person-of-the-year/

(CNN) -- Time named Pope Francis its person of the year Wednesday after nine months of a papacy that has brought accolades from reformers, raised fears among conservatives, and drawn widespread adulation from people around the world for his man-of-the-people ways.

"He took the name of a humble saint and then called for a church of healing," Time wrote in its announcement. "The septuagenarian superstar is poised to transform a place that measures change by the century."
Following him in the top five were NSA leaker Edward Snowden, gay rights activist Edith Windsor, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

The top 10 also included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, singer Miley Cyrus, U.S. President Barack Obama, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of health and human services.
The new pope "comes at a time when the church seemed to be needing a huge burst of new energy," Time contributor Howard Chua-Eoan said in a video announcing the magazine's decision.
The magazine's international editor, Bobby Ghosh, said Francis' contributions in his short time in office have changed the church's image as well as its substance.

"He's changed perceptions of the church from being this out-of-touch institution to one that is humble and merciful," Ghosh said. "He's changed the focus of the church from being focused on doctrine to becoming more about service. And he's changed the tone in which the church speaks to one of compassion. It's all about the poor. This is the church as it used to be in its -- arguably its best period in the past. And Francis seems to be bringing that back."
He has also opened up church finances and addressed controversial issues other popes have shied away from discussing publicly, Ghosh said.

"He's talking about homosexuality, about giving women a bigger say in the church. These are things that are very, very important. They're not just words. He's actually following them up with action," Ghosh said.
The Vatican welcomed Time's selection, while making it clear the man so widely recognized for his humility didn't seek the award and didn't want its light to shine on him but on the mission of the church.

"We think that the declaration of the Pope as the man of the year is a positive sign. because it is a very prestigious declaration, given to a man that announces the love of God and the peace for all," the Rev. Federico Lombardi told reporters. "And the Pope does not look for honors, but he is happy if his message -- his message of the love of good -- is received and understood. And then, in this sense, he can be happy of this declaration."

A pope of many firsts
Francis, formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, is known as a humble man, a capable administrator and -- as expected of a new pope -- a man of great faith.
He is also a man of many firsts: the first non-European pope in the modern era, the first pontiff from South America, and the first Jesuit to be elected head of the Roman Catholic Church.

In his first public act, the new pope broke with tradition by asking the estimated 150,000 people packed into St. Peter's Square to pray for him, rather than blessing the crowd first. He later controversially washed the feet of a young woman at a juvenile prison in Rome in a ceremony that's traditionally been restricted to men.
In a recent letter to the church, he admonished leaders to focus on helping the poor and broken above all else.
"I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security," he wrote.

And he has revitalized an ancient church office dedicated to aiding the poor. Francis appointed a new head of the office of the Vatican Almoner, instructing him to spend his time outside the Vatican looking for people to help.
"You can sell your desk," Francis told the new almoner, Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, Time reported. "You don't need it. You need to get out of the Vatican. Don't wait for people to come ringing. You need to go out and look for the poor."

Francis has also stirred controversy among some conservatives for trying to steer the church away from focus on social issues such as contraception, abortion and same-sex marriage. In what has been seen as a conciliatory tone toward homosexuals, he has said he was in no position to judge gays.

Pope's past
Francis, 76, was born in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936. The son of an Italian immigrant, he trained as a chemist before deciding to become a priest.
He was ordained by the Jesuits in 1969 and became co-archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1997, then sole archbishop of that city one year later. He was made a cardinal in 2001 and was president of the Argentine bishops conference from 2005 to 2011.

As cardinal, Francis clashed with the government of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner over his opposition to same-sex marriage and free distribution of contraceptives.
He was runner-up in the 2005 papal conclave, behind then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, according to a profile by CNN Vatican analyst John Allen published by the National Catholic Reporter.
The new pope brings together the first and the developing worlds, Allen wrote. Besides his Italian roots, Francis studied theology in Germany.

His career coincided with the so-called Dirty War in Argentina, which lasted from 1976 to 1983. It is estimated that as many as 30,000 people were killed or disappeared during the country's military dictatorship.
The church was seen by some as not having done enough in that period. In a complaint filed three days before the 2005 conclave, Francis was accused of complicity in the 1976 kidnapping of two liberal Jesuit priests, Allen wrote. Francis reportedly denied the charge.

He is known for his simplicity and has a reputation of being a voice for the poor.

How wonderful! The Pope does what he preached. Leaving the Vatican at night and dressed as a regular priest just to be with the poor, feeding them and spending time with them. Such a great way to reach out to people and get to know them personally. From there, he can learn a lot about what they need and what are the problems they are encountering. It doesnt matter how high one's position is so long as their motivation is to help others. Keep it up!

Pope Francis, Time's Person of the Year, has a very compassionate approach to his Papal Office. Shedding the trappings of his position, he has gone down to the streets to feed the homeless. He says of the Church:" I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from clinging to its own security"

His compassion is boundless. Hence, he raises controversial issues and supports them, issues such as homosexuality. He controversially washes the feet of a young woman in a juvenile prison. He is seen in a recent picture, embracing a man with tumors growing all over his face and body.

He has revitalized an ancient church office dedicated to aiding the poor. He appointed a new head of the Vatican Almoner's office, instructing him to spend his time outside the Vatican looking for people to help.

Compassion has no boundaries of religion. It is as much present in a Buddhist World Leader, like the Dalai Lama  as it is in a Christian World Leader, like Pope Francis.

Pope Francis has been well known for his down to earth approach, and it is indeed setting a good example to all practitioners of all faiths. If a person of such "high" status can be so humble and show kindness to people on the street, how about "normal" people like us? what excuses do we give ourselves not to show kindness to others?

Pope Francis has also been working on closing the gaps between religions and it is something I am happy to see... for too long we have too much hatred between religions and unnecessary wars.

Thank you Pope Francis for working tirelessly for others..

This is such a wonderful thing to be sneaky about. I am very sure the homeless and destitude too need their share of spiritual comfort from the Pope. It is so sad they could not attend the mass held in the church due to not being able dress up like the rest of the congregation. But without a doubt, deep down in their hearts, they are just as faithful. Bravo to the Pope for bringing spirituality and hope to those not able to attend church. If only the same situation can happen to the Shugden practicing monks who have been chased out from the monasteries for practicing their deity.

There is a lot to say about anyone who practices compassion, but even more about a religious figure - the head of the roman catholic church, nonetheless - who is now a living reminder of what religion should be about, that is caring for others. Actually I think it is more than religion, it is the innate state of our inner selves to be this way.

Hopefully his compassion and open heart can sway those within his Church to be more open to change and embrace everyone. From his messages and speeches you can obviously tell that his is definitely more liberal than his immediate predecessors, but he is held back from implementing the changes that he wants due to the entrenched ideals long held by his brethren. He is an example of the compassion that Jesus showed during hs life and taught others to follow, but we never see many high profile figures do the same within the Christian world.

Pope Francis is a Bodhisattva. He does his work quietly without highlighting it to the media. He dressed in normal clothes to escape public media. He showed care and love by embracing the ill, the hopeless, the destitute and homeless. His body, speech and mind is a projection of his work, speech and action. We need more like him in this world.
