DHARAMSHALA, JUNE 11: One of the most prominent spiritual figures of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most influential personality from Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism has passed away earlier today in Germany. Sources said heart attack is said to be the cause of his death but there is no official confirmation from his close aides.

Shamar Rinpoche Mipham Chokyi Lodro was born in Derge, Tibet. At the age of four he was recognized by the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpei Dorje as the 14th Shamarpa.

Shamar Rimpoche is one of the three main disciples of the previous Karmapa. After the death of the 16th Karmapa, Shamarpa recognized Thaye Dorje as the 17th Karmapa in 1994. However, Tai Situpa Rinpoche chose another boy, Ogyen Trinley Dorje as the 17th Karmapa who was also approved by the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Shamar Rinpoche met His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the 13th of August, 2010.

“I met His Holiness the Dalai Lama at in Dharamsala at His Holiness’ residence. We had a discussion for approximately one and a half hours and had a very important and detailed exchange of views regarding the ongoing Karmapa controversy and its possible solution. Although this matter is not easily resolved, since it is connected to the politics of China and India as well, with His Holiness Dalai Lama’s blessing and support I am confident that there will be an amicable solution, which will be beneficial for the Karma Kagyü lineage, as well as for Tibetan Buddhism in general,” Shamar Rinpoche wrote in a statement.

Trinley Thaye Dorje, the other claimant to the Rumtek Monastery, the headquarters of Karmapas, have expressed his grief over the death of his patron. “Sadly, his physical manifestation has left our material world. Yet he was and continues to be our teacher and blessings will; remain with us always,” Thaye Dorje said on his official website.

This is share a bit about the background of the 14th Shamarpa, Mipham Chokyi Lodro.

Brief Background of the Shamarpa Lineage

Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers are founded and directed by Shamar Rinpoche, who, along with the Gyalwa Karmapa, is the current holder of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Shamar Rinpoche is the 14th Shamarpa, or Red Hat Lama of Tibet. For a brief bio of the 14th Shamar Rinpoche, see here.

The Shamarpas are the second-oldest reincarnate lineage. As with any reincarnate lineage, what earlier incarnations have done or not done does not define the subsequent Shamarpas. The current Shamarpa has said, "Since every incarnation is a new life, credit from great deeds in the past is not transferred automatically to each new incarnation. Likewise, one cannot blame any reincarnate Lama for not being as great as his or her previous incarnation. Boys or girls are recognized as tulkus at a young age, placed in monasteries and given a tremendous amount of responsibility. They do not choose this life for themselves. This is true of every Tibetan reincarnate lineage. Greatness must be earned anew in each life."

Many of the Shamarpas were great scholars. In particular, the 1st Shamarpa Khedrup Trakpa Senge (1284-1349), 2nd Shamarpa Kachö Wangpo (1350-1405), 3rd Shamarpa Chöpel Yeshe (1406-1452), 4th Shamarpa Chökyi Trakpa Pal Yeshe (1453 -1526), 5th Shamarpa Könchog Yenlag, (1526-1583), 6th Shamarpa Chökyi Wangchuk, (1584-1629), 8th Shamarpa Palchen Chökyi Döndrup, (1695-1732) and 10th Shamarpa Chödrup Gyatso (1742-1792), stand out in terms of their intellectual contributions. The 4th Shamarpa even ruled Tibet for 12 years towards the end of his life.

The history of the Shamarpas becomes especially dramatic during and after the lifetime of the 10th Shamarpa, Chödrup Gyatso (1642-1692). For that reason it is useful to explain his life in more detail here. The 10th Shamarpa was a brother to the 3rd Panchen Lama Palden Yeshe (1738-1780), a highly ranked Gelukpa Lama. The 10th Shamarpa had a very poor relationship with the Gelukpa government of Tibet that was based in Lhasa and directly ruled by the Chinese Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799). Tsomonling Ngawang Tsultrim, the imperial Chinese representative in Lhasa at that time, was especially opposed to him for a number of reasons. First of all, he belonged to the Karma Kagyu school and claimed that that the Kagyus were the former rulers of Tibet. Second, he was on friendly terms with the British government in India, a state of affairs that had come about because his mother was a princess of Ladakh. Both of these facts made the Emperor's government very suspicious. Fearing censure or punishment from the governments of both Tibet and China, the 10th Shamarpa fled to Nepal. He lived there comfortably until, in 1788, a war broke out between Tibet and Nepal over the minting and circulation of counterfeit coins. The 10th Shamarpa was used by the government of Nepal as a mediator in the peace talks with Tibet, and as a result the government of Tibet informed the Emperor Qianlong that the Shamarpa had taken the side of the Nepalese in the conflict. The Gelukpa Tibetan government then requested that the Shamarpa institution be banned. The ban was effected upon the death of the 10th Shamarpa in 1792 and remained in effect until the 20th century.

From 1792 until 1963, no Shamarpa reincarnation was enthroned, although the 11th, 12th, and 13th Shamarpas were secretly recognized during that time by the Karmapas. In 1963, the 14th Dalai Lama and the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa formally restored the institution of the Shamarpas, enthroning the current 14th Shamarpa.

Yes, as Karmapa Thaye Dorje writes of Shamar Rinpoche in his letter, "we must dedicate our merits and practice to him and do the practice of Amitabha, since he himself is the emanation of Amitabha":

http://www.karmapa.org/news/letter_passing_of_shamarpa_rinpoche_final.pdf

The BodhiPath organization, which is Shamar Rinpoche's organization, also mentions that if we are unfamilar with the practice of Amitabha, to do the practice of Chenrezig, or Samantabadra's wishing prayer among others.  Since Shamar Rinpoche is a Buddha, I am not concerned for him in passing from his emanation body, but just concerned for the world having enough merit to have him teach again.  I am dedicating the merit of my normal daily practice to the world's having enough merit to receive Rinpoche's teachings in the future, and until all living beings attain Buddhahood.  Shamarpa chenno

May Shamar Rinpoche have swift rebirth and may all living beings receive the continued countless blessings of Buddha Amitaba in the form of Shamar Rinpoche.

May Sharmapa take a swift rebirth and return to continue benefiting all sentient beings. So sad to read about this sudden news, and I will dedicate my prayers to Sharmapa for us to create the merits for his new incarnation to be found soon. May thousands of lights be lit to dispel the obstacles for us to meet the Sharmapa again.

I wonder what will now happen with the 2 recognized Karmapas, and how the Karma Kagyu lineage will grow from here.

According to Karmapa.org, the official website of the Karmapa (Thaye Dorje), "Shamar Rinpoche's final stage of meditation was completed on the morning of June 13th, which is also the day of the paranirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni."

http://www.karmapa.org/news/shamar_rinpoche_kudung_2014_en.pdf

I am still making many prayers that the world will have enough merit for his swift rebirth and swift recognition by Karmapa (Thaye Dorje).

It is indeed a great loss for Buddhism as a whole. The 14th Sharmapa is very influential and outspoken with his stance. The following article shows how forthright His Holiness is on what exactly happened with the recognition of the 2 Karmapas. His fearlessness of expressing the truth is commendable.

http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/news/the-shamarpas-statement/

His Holiness ends his statement with the following:

"To date, I have never changed my position or broken any promises. If I am guilty of changing any position at all, then it is that I finally accepted Ugyen Thinley as a Karmapa in China after first disagreeing and I chose not to pursue the forensic tests on the prediction letter presented by Situ Rinpoche any further, as mediated by Tulku Ugyen. If this change of position is dissatisfactory to Situ Rinpoche’s supporters, then it is very easy for me to continue onward with my original proposal. On all other concerns surrounding this issue of the two Karmapas, I have not budged and have stood firmly in my position. Hence, any accusations towards me claiming otherwise are baseless and misguided. I remain resolute."

It is indeed very sad and shocking to read news of the passing of the 14th Sharmapa.
Sad in the sense that the world have lost a great teacher and also a very outspoken and courageous individual. I pray that all his students are holding on strong to their faith at this time of loss and that the Sharmapa will return again swiftly to continue to guide all beings to enlightenment.
Here is the link to an article on DS.com in which the Sharmapa mentioned Dorje Shugden practitioners.

I miss Sharmar Rinpoche's being present in an emanation body.  May we all meet him again soon when he directs his rebirth.
So, I love everything Shamarpa taught and stands for:
but here is one thing I admire and think about a lot:
that he taught us to think for ourselves.... if you read the whole letter in response to poor misguided Mr. Thurman, you can see that Shamar Rinpoche wants people to think for themselves and not be "package believers"-- that is not to believe everything we hear but to examine things for ourselves.

Buddhists from all Over the World Bid Farewell in Germany to One of the Highest Teachers of Tibetan Buddhism

RENCHEN, Germany, June 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

Farewell ceremony in the village of Renchen in the Black Forest / 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, head of the Karma Kagyu tradition, comes to Germany in order to accompany the body of his teacher to India
Cross reference: Picture is available via epa european pressphoto agency and can be downloaded free of charge at: http://www.presseportal.de/story.htx?firmaid=52714

Several thousand Buddhists from all over the world met at Renchen in Germany to pay their last respects to His Holiness the 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche. His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje led the impressive farewell ceremony for his teacher. He will accompany Shamar Rinpoche on his last journey to India and several other Asian countries. Tens of thousands of Buddhists will bid him farewell there. Shamar Rinpoche himself did not fear death. In one of his last teachings he said: "You don't need to be afraid of death if you know how to practice [meditation] in death."

Shamar Rinpoche died of a cardiac arrest on 11th June, at the age of 61 in the meditation center of his Bodhi Path organization in Renchen-Ulm. Shamar Rinpoche was, after Karmapa Thaye Dorje, the highest-ranking teacher in the Karma Kagyu tradition and one of the most important and influential representatives of Tibetan Buddhism. He taught worldwide and established various humanitarian foundations in Europe, the USA and Asia.

After his death, letters of condolence were received from many high masters of Tibetan Buddhism as well as the Royal Family of the Kingdom of Bhutan. "I have known Rinpoche for many years and my family and I will always remember Shamar Rinpoche as a close and dear friend," His Majesty Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the 4th King of Bhutan, wrote.

Since the death of the 16th Karmapa in the year 1981, Shamar Rinpoche had continued the centuries-old Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Today's spiritual leader of that school, the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, was recognized, brought out of Tibet and enthroned by Shamar Rinpoche in 1994.

With its more than 180 meditation and study centers, the Karma Kagyu is the most widespread Buddhist school in Germany. It is worldwide represented by more than 900 monasteries as well as meditation centers under the guidance of Karmapa Thaye Dorje.

I felt so sad when I saw Rinpoche's coffin--- but then so happy when I remember he is just doing his activity so he will be back.  The Karmapa's presence makes me feel everything will be okay:).
According to Rinpoche's website he was 62.  Here is a link to his long-life prayer, composed by H.H. Karmapa (Thaye Dorje):

http://www.karmapa.org/news/karmapa_XVII_shamar_rinpoche_swift_rebirth_prayer_june_14.pdf

If you would like to add in his long life prayer to your regular daily practice, it would greatly benefit all living beings.

Om mani peme hum...
Maybe the 14th Shamarpa was having a body that is failing and getting old, He decided to take a new rebirth and come back healthy and young to be able to benefit much more. We will never know. I do hope that He reincarnate soon and continue to turn the wheel of Dharma.

The whole world is praying for the swift return of Shamar Rinpoche. This is the prayer for the swift rebirth of the reincarnation of the late Kunzig Shamar Mipham Chökyi Lödro. Due to the request of the general secretary of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, Jigme Rinpoche, all the Rumtek Sangha, and the Sangha of the Lhadak monastery, Karma Chokor Drug Gyud Ling, I, the 17th Karmapa, have composed this prayer with whole-hearted supplication on the precious full moon day of 13th June 2014 (15th day of the 4th month of the Tibetan calendar.

Swift Rebirth Prayer – “Supplicating the factual word of a Saint”
Composed by H.H. 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje

The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of limitless purelands,
Their wisdom and compassion embodied by the direct and indirect assembled Gurus,to them
And to the Three Jewels and dharma protectors, the true source of refuge,
With one-pointed devotion, I supplicate with my three doors.

The embodiment of all Buddhas, the lord of Dewachen,
Emanating in boundless, immeasurable manifestations,
Lord Chökyi Lödro, the embodiment of the Three Families,
May you appear on the crown of the head of privileged sentient beings!

Compassionate power arising from the deep and vast expanse of wisdom,
The supreme emanation, compassionate towards all beings,
Lord of the Three Families, inseparable from the Three Secrets,
May you return swiftly, Lord Chökyi Lödro!

Benefiting limitless sentient beings in limitless kalpas,
Accomplished the bodhisattva’s activities, and
Attained the supreme stage of unity, in limitless realms,
May you return swiftly as the manifestation of these activities!

Particularly holding the traditional teachings of Dhagpo Kagyu,
The one who is incomparable in carrying out the Buddha’s teachings,
Chökyi Lödro, the very root of the Practice Lineage,
May your Nirmanakaya return swiftly!

By the blessing of the truth of the infallible Three Jewels,
Mahakala and his consort with their assemblies,
By the power of their unobstructed activities,
May all my aspirations be fulfilled as they were made.

May all that is virtuous and good flourish!
