Such statements fly in the face of the Dalai Lama’s image as a peacemaker who promotes kindness, tolerance and compassion. How could such message be delivered with a straight face is baffling considering that the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans have been surviving on the generosity of other countries in light of their own refugee status and to date the Dalai Lama continuously seek such support. Further, whatever hype and favourable saintly image and advantages reaped by the Dalai Lama in the West were in connection with the Tibetan’s refugee status. Yet, shockingly despite this, the Dalai Lama now discourages other countries from accepting refugees forced to flee their war torn country for a chance in life. More so considering that the Dalai Lama having experienced it himself, should even relate better to the hardship and suffering of the refugees.
It maybe that such statement is a calculated move to preserve or salvage the wavering support to the Tibetan cause but if that is the case, it has likely backfired. In addition, it brings to light the incompetency of the Tibetan government to date which would not help in generating continuous support. Evidently the Tibetans are still refugees after 60 years and there are very little significant positive changes to living conditions in the Tibetan diaspora from how it was when they first landed despite the more than generous donations pouring in from their host countries, organisations and private contributions from worldwide
