Distinguished Tibetan Buddhist Lama Zasep Tulku Rinpoche’s “A Tulku’s Journey from Tibet to Canada” has been reviewed as: a must read for students; a should read for Buddhists. In addition, it also debunks the malicious lies spread against the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, whose practice has been banned by the Dalai Lama and Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) since 1996.

Quote
I’ll sum up as I began: Zasep Tulku Rinpoche’s "A Tulku’s Journey from Tibet to Canada" is equal parts autobiography, spiritual epic journey, gripping adventure narrative, inspiring Buddhist life example, and a travelogue spanning nine countries.

Of course this is a must read for Zasep Rinpoche’s students, or anyone contemplating asking to become his student. It is also a “should read” for anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism. It’s also a good read for anyone who enjoys biographies, since it contains all of the elements of a great spiritual bio: adventure, a fascinating life, spiritual insights, and a glimpse into the lives of a once-hidden people in the land of snows.

Rinpoche truly brings Tibet alive in an intimate and honest way. While his love of his teachers, Buddhism, Tibet and his people is palpable and constant, he doesn’t portray Tibet as a “Shangri-La”, and he doesn’t hesitate to describe both the good and bad.

In his book, he openly declares in many parts of the book that "the Gyalchen Dorje Shugden practice is very close to (his) heart.” This is understandable as the practice of Dorje Shugden was widely accepted not only by the majority of the Gelugpa but also by the Sakya and Kagyu and Nyingma lineages.  It is important to remember that Dorje Shugden was the protector practice that Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo and Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang trusted and therefore it only makes sense that most Gelugpa practitioners would hold this deity close to their hearts as well. Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo and Trijang Dorje Chang were the two teachers who taught literally all of the Gelugpa monks and scholars of their time and it would only be natural that they would also give their students the Dorje Shugden practice that they trusted.

Zasep Tulku Rinpoche also expresses how important it is for monasteries and Dharma centres to support each other and not be divided by those who would seek to conquer and rule for political reasons. Zasep Tulku Rinpoche is skilful in saying that the Tibetan leadership has been dividing the various Tibetan Buddhist lineages and that all lineages and monasteries should be smart and not allow that to happen.

A practitioner from young and a student of highly attained Dorje Shugden practitioners.

Zasep Tulku Rinpoche has been practicing Dorje Shugden since he was a mere 9 years of age, and it was a family practice. His father's teacher, Lama Gelong Chojor Gyamtso was an oracle for the Dharma Protector Gyalchen Dorje Shugden who could go into trance spontaneously and was renowned in the eastern province of Kham, Tibet, where Zasep Rinpoche's family lived. Lama Gelong Chojor Gyamtso had helped many people, as a healer and with divination. As Zasep Rinpoche says in his book, "he was very good at prediction and gave many people good advice on their spiritual practice."

It was also the premonition of Lama Gelong Chojor Gyamtso in trance of Dorje Shugden that saved the life of the young Zasep Rinpoche prior to the Chinese PLA invasion of Kham in 1957.

Zasep Tulku Rinpoche also recounts how Lama Gelong Chojor Gyamtso was one of three kind teachers who made a great impression on him, and how they encouraged him to stay on the path of Dharma. The famous Dorje Shugden oracle from Kham was also a devoted Vajrayogini practitioner, and before his passing, had a vision of a staircase made of turquoise stretching from his window to the sky. This is seen as a sign that Vajrayogini was calling him to her Pure Land. This is an important revelation because it directly counters the Tibetan leadership's accusation that Dorje Shugden is a demonic practice. According to the tenets of Buddhism, demon worshippers will take rebirth in the lower realms. Therefore, isn't it illogical to say that the oracle of Dorje Shugden was a demon worshipper when all the signs point to him ascending to Vajrayogini's pure land? .

Zasep Tulku Rinpoche came under the tutelage of the great Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang (the tutor of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama), Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and Kyabje Guru Deva Rinpoche. He received his first Dorje Shugden Life Entrustment — Sogtae — from Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang when he was 17 years old while studying for his Acharya degree at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi, India.

Later on, Zasep Tulku Rinpoche would again receive Dorje Shugden Sogtae for the second time, from Kyabje Zong Rinpoche.

According to Zasep Tulku Rinpoche (as well), it was Dorje Shugden through trance of the Panglung oracle, not Nechung, who saved the Dalai Lama from China’s invasion in 1959.

This account of how Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang sought the advice of Dorje Shugden is highly significant as Zasep Tulku Rinpoche clearly states that it was through trance of the Panglung oracle (Kuten Lama) that the Dharma Protector Gyalchen Dorje Shugden gave precise instructions for the Dalai Lama to make his exit from Tibet and the route they should take that will keep him safe.

Zasep Tulku Rinpoche is very clear in his biography on the details of the Dalai Lama’s famous journey out of Tibet, how the Dalai Lama “put his trust in Gyalchen Dorje Shugden’s prediction,” including their stopovers and thanksgiving Serkyem tea offering by Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. This is not the first time there is evidence that it was Dorje Shugden who helped the Dalai Lama escape from Tibet in 1959. There were also similar accounts from Sera monks who made the journey from Tibet to India together with the Dalai Lama and saw with their own eyes how Dorje Shugden saved the Dalai Lama.

An account of the Flight of the Dalai Lama by Chagzoe Lobsang Yeshe

Excerpt from Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang's Autobiography

The formation of the Chushi Gangdruk regiment

Yet despite the overwhelming evidence that it was Dorje Shugden who saved His Holiness the Dalai Lama during the flight from Tibet, until today the official website of the Dalai Lama claims it was Nechung who saved him. The truth is that Nechung gave wrong advice - he said that the Dalai Lama should remain in Tibet and that no harm would come to him. Fortunately, the Dalai Lama, Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang and the Dalai Lama's key advisors at the time had the wisdom and foresight to put their trust in Dorje Shugden instead of Nechung. But, instead of showing gratitude, the Tibetan leadership today has turned on Dorje Shugden who saved the Dalai Lama.

Eyewitness account that the Sakya propitiated Shugden.

Zasep Rinpoche also tells of his time at Sakya Monastery, where he saw the shrine of Sakya Mugchung, one of the Dharma Protectors of the Sakya tradition. Zasep Rinpoche clearly explains the connection between the Dharma Protector Sakya Mugchung and Dorje Shugden, and how Sakya lineage masters recognised his enlightened qualities. In fact, Dorje Shugden was one of the 3 Sakya Protectors known as Gyalpo Sum, with the other two being Setrab Chen and Tsiu Marpo. Gyalpo Sum including Dorje Shugden played a vital role in the Sakya lineage but the Sakyas were forced to denounce their own protector because of politics. Same disloyalty like the Tibetan leaders who banned Dorje Shugden.

In his biography, Zasep Rinpoche also acknowledges that the Shugden controversy was orchestrated by the Central Tibetan Administration to deflect attention from their incompetence. This makes sense when anyone applies simple logic. Dorje Shugden has been practiced for nearly four centuries by the highest lamas including the present Dalai Lama who wrote a praise to the deity. So how come the deity only became "bad" in 1996? Because by then the CTA needed a scapegoat to deflect attention away from their numerous failures such as their failure to fulfil their promise to return the Tibetans to their homeland. The failure in regaining their homeland was not the doing of Dorje Shugden but a result of the ineptitude and corruption within the Tibetan leadership. Now, yet another respectable lama like Zasep Tulku Rinpoche confirms that.

Zasep Tulku Rinpoche is to be applauded for not mincing his words, for having the courage to call it as it is, that the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is fully at fault for the schism in the Gelug school that spilled over to divide Tibetan Buddhists around the world.

Further on, he describes how in the early refugee camps, before the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA)'s cruel scheme to divide Tibetan Buddhist schools, all Tibetans were united, practising their own protectors and deities harmoniously.

More teachings, transmissions and lineages held by Zasep Tulku Rinpoche:

Is Zasep Tulku Rinpoche a fake tulku? A Chinese spy? Let’s take a look...

Born on 1st July 1948 in the eastern province of Kham, Tibet, His Eminence Zasep Tulku Rinpoche was recognised as the 13th incarnation of Lama Konchog Tenzin of Zuru Monastery by three most venerated lamas: the 16th Karmapa, Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang (the Junior Tutor to the present Dalai Lama), and a highly realised Nyingma Lama.  He was installed at Zuru Monastary, at the tender age of five. Later he was again enthroned at Sera Monastery where he began his studies.

The young Zasep Tulku took the eight precepts and robes from Gelug Lama Gelong Chojor Gyamtso. Chojor Gyamtso was a mahasiddha who was a disciple of the incomparable Kyabje Pabongkha Dechen Nyingpo.

When the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959 Zasep Rinpoche escaped to Dalhousie in India. Under the advice of Trijang Rinpoche, Zasep Rinpoche resumed his studies under the personal tutorship of Venerable Geshe Thupten Wangyel, a highly realised yogi in Dalhousie, India. He also studied with and received empowerments from many renowned Gelug and Kagyu teachers in Tibet, including some of the legendary lamas of Tibet such as: Yongzin Trijang Rinpoche, His Holiness Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, Venerable Lati Rinpoche, Venerable Tara Tulku Rinpoche and Venerable Khalkha Jetsun Dampa Rinpoche.

Today, Zasep Tulku Rinpoche is not only an internationally respected teacher of Gelugpa Buddhism, but also the spiritual director for many retreat centres across the world, in Canada, Australia, and the United States.

In addition, Rinpoche is also the founder of Gaden for the West, an international organization created for the express purpose of bringing, interpreting, and integrating Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhism to the western world. His organisation is also involved with several charitable relief projects in Tibet, Mongolia and India through Gaden Relief.

This is definitely a welcomed publication since we don’t see a lot of high lama speaking up on the truth about Dorje Shugden. Interesting how Zasep Tulku Rinpoche’s account of HHDL’s escape to Tibet collaborates the fact of Dorje Shugden’s primary involvement in ensuring the safety of HHDL then.

On a separate note, Zasep Tulku Rinpoche’s illustrious background is also captured in http://www.dorjeshugden.com/great-masters/recent-masters/zasep-jamseng-rinpoche/

Well, if he's not, he will be called one soon 8) Everyone is a Chinese spy  :-[

Zasep Tulku is among the senior (elder in age) lamas, very respected because they are the  Rinpoches/lamas who come from old Tibet, students of Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang, compared to the younger generations of Tulkus born outside Tibet. I'm surprised he mentioned about Dorje Shugden and also shared his personal stories.

Very encouraging and hope many more lamas would make a stand about Dorje Shugden practice.

The part about Shugden controversy orchestrated by the Central Tibetan Administration to deflect attention from their incompetence, he's got my respect for saying this in his own autobiography!

It is extremely encouraging that Zasep Rinpoche has come out with this biography and within it, the practice of Dorje Shugden is mentioned. It is evident that the practice of Dorje Shugden was very prominent prior to the ban, it's not just a 'minor' practice like how the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) likes to claim.

The CTA likes to mislead people into thinking that the act of practicing Dorje Shugden or talking about the practice is going against His Holiness the Dalai Lama. What they don't understand is, that's the last thing Dorje Shugden practitioners actually want. Shugden practitioners get nothing but threats and hatred by continuing with the practice, if the motivation is not considered pure, then I don't know what is.

People need to understand that originally, the practice of Dorje Shugden has nothing to do with HHDL and even now, HHDL should not get involved by telling people to stop the practice and by banning it further. In actuality, no one has the authority to stop our practice except for our gurus/teachers whom we receive the practice from.

This book by Zasep Rinpoche is extremely encouraging, I hope that Zasep Rinpoche will continue to spread the practice of Gyalchen Dorje Shugden to more sentient beings to benefit them  :D

Amazing! The very protector who saved the Dalai Lama's life is none other than Dorje Shugden. But instead of being grateful to Dorje Shugden, Dalai Lama banned Dorje Shugden, trying to make Dorje Shugden's lineage disappear altogether in this world. What do you think of such person?

Yet, Dorje Shugden has never once become angry about that, despite being criticized by the person He saved, Dorje Shugden always advised everyone to respect the Dalai Lama. This is a real selfless Bodhisattva, we will not be wrong by relying on Him.

Zasep Rinpoche has now corroborated what others such as Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche has said all along, that it was Dorje Shugden through the Panglung Oracle which advised His Holiness Dalai Lama's escape to India.

Helmut Gassner is a long-term Western Buddhist monk, scholars and practitioner, and he was the interpreter (and chauffeur) for the Dalai Lama for 17 years.

Here is part of his speech at the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation Hamburg, on March 26th 1999, which also corroborates the above.

What Zasep Rinpoche wrote in his autobiography is quite a big news for Shugden practitioners, but what I find it quite strange is that, this book was published 2016 (about 2 years ago), but nobody seems to pick it up?

Clearly what Zasep Rinpoche said about Shugden helped Dalai Lama (and not Nechung) is coincide with what DorjeShugden.com published (http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/the-controversy/uncovered-truth-evidence-of-how-dorje-shugden-was-actually-behind-the-dalai-lamas-escape-out-of-tibet-to-india-in-1959/) but no one has picked the content of his autobiography and show the content to the world, especially the Shugden community? This is strange, but nonetheless, it is good to know Zasep Rinpoche open accepts Shugden practice and acknowledged this practice is good.

I just wish that more Shugden people can know about this. Rejoice!

I do agree with you and I must admire Zasep Tulku Rinpoche's courage and forthrightness in stating that CTA used the ban on Dorje Shugden as a deflection from their incompetence. I do hope that this is an encouragement for other DS Lamas to stand up for their rights of practice. United they would be a formidable team to bring done the ban once and for all. Especially now when the Dalai Lama is so desperately wishing to return to Tibet.

Well, Zasep Tulku Rinpoche sure put paid to the truth of who really saved the Dalai Lama. Such ungratefulness to actually write Dorje Shugden out of the truth. Nechung had wanted the Dalai Lama to stay in Tibet and most probably would had been tortured greatly if not death. Sad thing is now the Dalai Lama has to rely on the DS Lamas and practitioner to bring him back to Tibet as CTA is certainly not going to.

What a great find. Zasep Rinpoche is great lama that has benefitted many. His intention is only for the Dharma and never for politics. What he had said and written are trustable.

The Tibetan leadership CTA is out to take advantage of the Tibetan cause for their own self benefits. Their actions are destroying Tibetan Buddhism by planting falsehood and doubt on anyone who didn't toe their line.

With this book we have factual evidences Dorje Shugden from a high lama that countered the all misinformation from CTA propaganda.

Zasep Rinpoche is a great lama, and very attained, he also spent some time attending the Theravadan tradition as part of this learning process.

It is truly not something most lamas, would want to say the truth about the Dorje Shugden practice, and why it was started by the CTA. CTA wanted to control the lamas and Tibetans, for that they had to dismantle the Gelug order which happens to the biggest component practiced amongst all Tibetan people. Some of Zasep Rinpoche's picture when younger, he looked almost like a Japanese Zen master.

This book, yet another proof that the Dorje Shugden ban was orchestrated to hide the failures of the Tibetan government in exile, not for any altruistic motive, but just to keep them valid and being able to function continuously and when they are in government they can siphon off more funds meant for the Tibetan people.

People of the world, know that the Tibetan government in exile is no friend of Tibet, they only want to use this vehicle to milk money from Western Powers and people who are willing to support a Shangri-la that does not exist anymore at least not within the confines of the Tibetan diaspora in India.

It is amazing how Zasep Rinpoche's writing on His Holiness Dalai Lama's escape to Tibet is very similar to Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche's writing about the event in his biography. Seem like both lamas are telling the truth and it is not like what Central Tibetan Administration told us about the escape. CTA told us that it was Nechung who advised His Holiness the Dalai Lama to leave Tibet immediately but in fact, it was Dorje Shugden.

It was Dorje Shugden who gave clear and precise instruction for His Holiness's escape and saved His Holiness's life. Instead of being grateful to Dorje Shugden, now CTA turned around and accused Dorje Shugden of harming the Dalai Lama's life. They have no gratitude at all and this shows us their true nature. Just like how they are treating India. After so many years of taking free land, assistance and resources from India, they did not give anything back to India other than a few cheapskates Thank you India events.

When holy beings like Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Zasep Rinpoche wrote about Dalai Lama's escape from Tibet into India, we should trust them because they have no benefit if they had lied about the truth. On the other hand, CTA has all the reasons to lie about it and they are a bunch of selfish politicians that could not care less about the Tibetans in exile. Everyone should think logically about the ban and not just accept whatever that CTA told them.

What's most important is that there is now even more unassailable proof that it was Dorje Shugden and not Nechung who saved the Dalai Lama's life and ensured his safe escape into exile. For decades the Central Tibetan Administration under their puppet leader Lobsang Sangay have tried to throw the blame for the failure of the Tibetan cause at the feet of Dorje Shugden. But in truth, Dorje Shugden was just a scapegoat and it was the Tibetan leaders themselves who are to blame for the plight of the Tibetan people.

Now their web of lies is unravelling as lamas such as Zasep Rinpoche tell the truth of what really happened during the Dalai Lama's flight from Tibet. Those whom the CTA would paint as villains are the real heroes of the story:

Dorje Shugden - who gave the exact escape route, time of departure, and performed miracles along the way to ensure the Dalai Lama' safety
Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche - who oversaw the entire process of getting advice from Dorje Shugden via the Panglung Oracle
The Panglung Oracle - who devoted his life to serving the Tibetan nation and Tibetan Buddhism
Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche - who personally trained the Panglung Oracle and also recommended the practice of Dorje Shugden to all
The monks of Pomra Khamtsen (now Serpom Monastery) - who risked their lives accompanying the Dalai Lama into exile, serving him as bodyguards
and so on.

Clearly, Dorje Shugden and his practitioners are almost single-handedly responsible for the fact that the Dalai Lama is alive and well and safe in exile today. Those who are attacking Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden practitioners under the mistaken impression that he is a demon should really do their research, study historical documents and realize what a huge mistake they are making.
