Tibetans had been supportive of the Dalai Lama since the existence of the 1st Dalai Lama. Is it going to be easy for Tibetans to choose not to believe in the Dalai Lama or what he has to say? Were those Tibetans really ignorant? Strong supporters of the Dalai Lama will do anything to protect him and his reputation. Were they wrong to protect him?
Well, let's be clear that not everybody has always been so keen on the Dalai. A lot of Tibetans were just scared, or in exile--- like in many different times the Kagyupa, being popular and powerful, were terrorized by the Dalai Lama's "Gelugpa" court. The 5th Dalai Lama really didn't get along at all with Kagyupas, and there were several lives where the Shamar Rinpoche incarnations were "banned" in Tibet because Dalai recongitions were afraid of people with popular and religious power (the Karmapa always recognized the Shamarpa in exile---) The 10th Karmapa got chased out of Tibet by the 5th Dalai. If you ask me if the Dalais have even been enlightened since the 4th one--- nope. The found the wrong guy on the 5th--- because there is NOT A CHANCE that the 10th Karmapa would actually do anything wrong. That would be the political "Gelug" despot, thank you.
So, you have a lot of Tibetans that know better than to trust the Dalai--- and then he turned against his own lineage with Shugden ban--- so you see, a lot of people, if there were true democracy and if they could speak freely, then you know, they would ditch him anyway. If we make sure people are educated, they would ditch him for sure. I am thinking of people's future lives, so if we don't enter the pureland, do you want to be under Dalai rule next time? Not at all. No one deserves a despotic dictatorship that ruins all of Buddhism.
