Plans to hold a summit of Nobel peace prize winners in Cape Town in honor of Nelson Mandela were scrapped after laureates pulled out of the meeting, saying they were protesting the government’s refusal to grant a visa to the Dalai Lama.

South Africa has close political ties with China, which says the Dalai Lama is seeking secession for Tibet. China is the African nation’s biggest trading partner and the two countries are members of the BRICS group that also includes India, Russia and Brazil. South Africa’s government denied refusing entry to the Dalai Lama, saying he withdrew the visa application.

President Jacob Zuma’s administration rejected the Tibetan spiritual leader’s request to travel to the country in 2009, with Zuma saying at the time that China’s concerns must be respected. Two years later, the government failed to respond to the Dalai Lama’s request for a visa to attend the 80th birthday of his fellow Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

It is obvious that the Dalai Lama and the CTA is loosing the battle for the Tibetan Cause as China impose its sphere of influence around the world. Already most of Asia is a no go for the Dalai Lama. Africa is next and in the West more is "respectful" of China's feelings and given the many protest against the Dalai Lama for the banning of the Protector Dorje Shugden in the West, the Dalai Lama's influence is at its lowest ever.
