Supporting the Growth of Dorje Shugden in South Africa

Kelsang Mila, the resident teacher of Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Centre

In June 2014, Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Centre (VKBC) in Johannesburg, South Africa held a Dorje Shugden teaching and empowerment ceremony. Kelsang Mila, the resident teacher of VKBC, which is part of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) founded by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, gave the empowerment of this great Protector to approximately 40 people in attendance.

Several months before the empowerment, the administrators of VKBC wrote to DorjeShugden.com requesting for sponsorship of Dorje Shugden pendants, which would be given to those participating in the empowerment. Always happy to hear news of Dorje Shugden’s practice growing, especially through the efforts of dedicated and devoted practitioners such as those from the NKT, supporters of DorjeShugden.com contributed not only the pendants that were requested, but also sent additional gifts in appreciation of and to encourage further growth of Dorje Shugden’s practice.

Our gifts have arrived at Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Centre: 50 Dorje Shugden posters, 50 Dorje Shugden prayer cards, and 50 Dorje Shugden pendants, all depicting Dorje Shugden in peaceful form.

In 2012, DorjeShugden.com also sent a care package of Dorje Shugden pendants and other educational materials to a Kadampa center in Zululand, South Africa. As narrated in this video:

…it really has transformed their lives because they’ve been very, very ill with HIV and they’ve realized that they can still be happy and realized the happiness from within.

It is heartwarming to witness how Dorje Shugden’s blessings can bring so much happiness to those experiencing tremendous suffering. We pray that the lineage of this great protector continues to be imparted into the lives of people around the world, flourishing and spreading in the ten directions.

  1. Rejoice for the people in VKBC may all these people be always bless by DS help them to release all their suffering and pain . I must said their altar set up and all the offering look so nice the torma look very neat and the shape look perfect.

  2. South African Buddhism is precariously balanced between the need to adapt Buddhist teachings to local needs (currently the needs of mainly white, middle-class people who practise Buddhism) and the desire to stick as closely as possible to various original Asian models. The most important aspect is whether or not Buddhism is able to come to grips with its existence in an African context and in particular with indigenous African religion. In particular, the local concept of “ubuntu”.
Ubuntu roughly means “human kindness.” It is an idea from the Southern African region which means literally “human-ness,” and is often translated as “humanity towards others,” but is often used in a more philosophical sense to mean “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”. This concept was taken over in South Africa in the 1990s as a guiding ideal for the transition from apartheid to majority rule; “there is a need for understanding but not for vengeance, a need for reparation but not for retaliation, a need for ubuntu but not for victimization” Ubuntu asserts that society, not a transcendent being, gives human beings their humanity.
Well, in my opinion Buddhism seems like the perfect religion for practicing the concept of “ubuntu”. Buddhism emphasizes on loving kindness, boddhicitta aspirations and true wisdom. And Dorje Shugden is the most suitable Dharma Protector for this age. How blessed are those who have received the empowerment and teachings of this great protector !

  9. What a rejoicing news! Congratulations to those who received the Dorje Shugden teaching and empowerment ceremony at Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Centre (VKBC) in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is such a strong testament to the achievements of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for his students to carry his dharma into South Africa. Enlightened Dorje Shugden is indeed the protector of our times as shared by those in Zululand who are very ill with aids. The protector had helped them to realise the happiness from within even in times of such sufferings. May they be blessed with peace and Lord Dorje Shugden to be with them at all times.

I must commend on the settings and offerings prepared so beautifully. We can see how much effort of love had gone into this preparation and how sincere their motivations are. May the forty receivers of Lord Dorje Shugden’s practise be blessed always. Kudos to Kelsang Mila and those involved in bringing forth Lord Dorje Shugden’s practise and may VKBC continue to spread and bless the people in South Africa.

Kudos to dorjeshugden.com for your generosity and support of such meritorious spread of Lord Dorje Shugden’s practise. May the illogical ban on this enlightened Protector be swiftly lifted with the rise of his practitioners.

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
