Dalai Lama and the Iraq War

The war in Iraq had no popular mandate from any nation and no legal mandate from the international community.

Since the invasion there have been several hundred thousand civilian casualties and nearly 5000 Coalition soldiers have died. If ever there was a war that could be definitively condemned it is this one. But the Dalai Lama won’t condemn this war. He says it is too early to tell. Why?

  1. Dalai lama does not side. He believes that war only starts from within. Whether their purpose is defensive or offensive, these vast powerful organizations exist solely to kill human beings. We should think carefully about the reality of war. Most of us have been conditioned to regard military combat as exciting and glamorous – an opportunity for men to prove their competence and courage. If one soldier is killed, or maimed for life, at least another five or ten people – his relatives and friends – suffer as well. We should all be horrified by the extent of this tragedy, but we are too confused. These human rights are inclusive, interdependent and universal.Where there is democracy there is a greater possibility for the citizens of the country to express their basic human qualities, and where these basic human qualities prevail, there is also a greater scope for strengthening democracy. Most importantly, democracy is also the most effective basis for ensuring world peace.Peace and freedom cannot be ensured as long as fundamental human rights are violated. Similarly, there cannot be peace and stability as long as there is oppression and suppression.

  2. sorry, not because of i supported war but i dislike the way this video being designed with a few questions at the bottom of the video every time when HH Dalai Lama was speaking. that is no respect! you can’t compare the ordinary people’s perspective to HH’s opinion simply because no body know at the time will the war bring peace or better life to the Iraqis for many hundreds years to come? HH is a buddha, he doesn’t attach to money so whether he is receiving payroll from USA or not is different issue.

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
